Meet Brittany Pata: The 2021 March Bridal Madness Champion

The 2021 winner of our annual March Bridal Madness contest is Brittany Pata, a custom jewelry designer at Zachary’s Jewelers in Annapolis, MD!

I had the honor of speaking with Brittany and asking her some questions about her design journey, as well as her personal life! Learn more about Brittany and her winning March Bridal Madness design below.

Congratulations, Brittany, on being crowned the 12th annual March Bridal Madness champion! Before we get into the design, tell us a little bit about yourself!

I got married in May 2019 to my husband, Nick. Nick is a D.C. Firefighter who also volunteers in his spare time. We have two dogs, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Husky. We are a fun outdoorsy family, but we also just love to snuggle up on the couch with the pups and watch a movie.

A little about my background. I went to Florida State University (Go Seminoles!) and graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design. I have always been very artistic and my ability to draw and paint was an amazing gift I was given. When I was in grade school, I actually won a few art contests and dreamed about one day becoming a muralist, but fell into graphic design and loved it. After graduating, I realized there was something huge missing from my life and my career, and that was people. Sitting behind a computer designing just wasn’t enough for me.

That’s so interesting! How did your background get you into the jewelry industry?

This is a really good story! My mom is a philanthropist and has been on the Hospice Gala board for many years, and three years ago asked me if I would help volunteer at their annual Hospice Gala Event. When I got there, employees from Zachary’s Jewelers were there giving away a big-ticket item they were donating, and they needed help selling the raffle tickets. I stepped in, and Evangeline, the owner’s sister, and Constance, who is our COO, were impressed with the way I was selling and handling the raffle ticket purchases and told me that if they had a position open at the store, I would be the first person they called. Not even 6 months later I get a call for an interview, and the rest is history!

That’s an awesome story. I can tell you are passionate about what you do! Tell me, what is the story behind the winning design?

A young man came in and wanted to propose to his girlfriend, and luckily had acquired a beautiful family stone, a round brilliant diamond. Even though I have only been in jewelry for a couple years, I have always been able to see people well, and this young man was the first young man I had sat with that I could feel the loved he felt for her just seeping from every part of him. I could tell this young man truly just could not wait to start his life with her.

He wanted to create something special, so we landed on doing a fun and unique starburst halo style setting, and I was able to send him a few ideas using different shaped diamonds in different patterns, and he chose the winning design that you see here! He put all his trust in me, and together with Zachary’s Jewelers, we created a beautiful one-of-a-kind setting that she absolutely adores! When I handed the finished piece to my customer, we both teared up and it was such a beautiful moment.

It’s truly wonderful, the moments jewelers get to experience with customers, especially for occasions of this magnitude! Did you have any inspiration for the design?

A couple weeks prior to meeting my customer, Stuller had some website banners showcasing their new starburst style halo rings, and the ring I designed pulled some characteristics from one of those styles! When he came in and said he wanted to do something a little playful and fun, I knew exactly the direction to go based on the inspiration I had seen from visiting the Stuller website.

I think the starburst-style rings are becoming really popular, and rightfully so. They are beautiful! Can you tell me about the design process of this ring?

The process started off by me as the designer coming up with different drawn ideas to showcase his family’s stone. I have attached a photo of this. Then he chose the one he liked best, and after the estimate was approved, the CAD render images were sent to him for approval. He was very excited to move onto the next step!

After that, we met once more for me to show him the WAX, which we created for him to look at and approve before the ring went to casting and setting. He ended up being thrilled with the wax and loved every step of the process. When the finished product was completed, I took it outside, like I always do for all my custom designs, and took a few nicely lit images and videos of the ring to send to him with a text saying, “It’s HERE! And it’s Beautiful!”.

I’m sure he LOVED it, I know I did. You just might have to design my engagement ring! Outside of work, what are some of your interests or hobbies?

I am an avid dog lover, Peloton Spinner, scuba-diver, Netflix binger, sunset lover, crafter, and boat day enthusiast. I also love having a cocktail downtown Annapolis with friends on a warm summer day.

Thanks so much for sharing Brittany! We here at Stuller are so thrilled with your design. We are sure you made one lucky lady very happy. Be sure to check out Zachary’s Jewelers if you’re in the Annapolis area, and be sure to keep up with them on their Facebook and Instagram.

Additionally, follow Brittany’s personal design page on Instagram here to keep up with her journey in the industry as a jewelry designer.

Prepare for Mother’s Day With These 7 Social Media Posts

Wow, Mother’s Day already! It seems like just yesterday I was composing the 2020 version of this exact blog. Regardless of how fast time is flying, one of your busiest selling seasons is quickly approaching.

Moms are important. They do so much for us in ways we’ll never be able to reciprocate. What better way to commemorate her lifetime of love and devotion to you than jewelry that will forever be a memento of your love to her? And that’s where you, the jeweler, come in. You work hard to create gifts that entice feelings of love and care. And while you work on your craft, I’ll work on mine — creating social media posts!

It’s easy to get swept away in Mother’s Day madness, and social media usually takes the backseat when that happens. But have no fear. Here I am, giving you 7 social media posts that are ready to share.

All you need to do is click and drag the photos to your desktop, then copy and paste the caption.

I think jewelry is the perfect Mom gift for so many reasons. It’s a tangible, stylish form of expression of love. Years back, my mom had my brother and I pick out a band from a jewelry store as her Mother’s Day present. To this day, she wears it more than her wedding ring, and she thinks of us every time she looks at it. Moral of the story: buy your mother jewelry for this holiday!

Drive Springtime Sales with 3 Big Social Media Trends

Ahh… social media. The all-encompassing digital channel, intended to connect with others and share content. Really, though, it has become way more than just that. For a lot of businesses of any scale, social media has become a selling tool, a newsletter, an information hub, a means of marketing — all in one. In 2021, if your business does not have an active social presence, you are automatically deemed “fake” or “untrustworthy”. My point is: It’s important to be on social media and have a good knowledge of the ever-changing landscape.

That being said, trends come and go. Stay in the know by educating yourself on what works and what doesn’t on social media. Luckily, your favorite Gen Zer and resident social media savant has done the research for you. All you have to do is apply the information to your daily social media routine. So, let’s get into it!

Here are some 2021 social media trends you should be incorporating into your social strategy!

Social Commerce

So, this is a biggie, especially for you, the modern jeweler. Social commerce is basically just the ability for consumers to shop directly from the platform. Facebook and Instagram are spearheading this trend, in efforts to enhance social media user experience. Since Stuller does not sell direct to public, Stuller doesn’t participate in this trend, but it does make the shopping experience for a Facebook or Instagram users more effortless, which can directly increase your profits. Consumers are more likely to make purchases if they don’t have to jump through hoops to do so, which makes social media commerce a commodity you need to be implementing for your business in 2021.

Live Videos

Live videos have been popular for quite some time now, and they aren’t going anywhere. In fact, I’ve heard a lot of success stories from jewelers when discussing live content. Things like giveaways, product demos, and the like have performed well in their favor. Here at Stuller, we give a lot of informational live videos on Facebook, packed with merchandising, jewelry repair, and even social media tips! You can check our latest live series out here. (Bonus: you’ll get to watch a video of yours truly and my sweet friend and coworker LeeAnn talk about social media photography!)

Utilize live videos on your social platforms and encourage your audience to engage with them. This is a low-to-no cost way of getting up close and personal with your product and staff. These perform especially well when you’ve got someone charismatic in front of the camera!

Stories

Similarly to live videos, stories are here to stay. Speaking from experience here at Stuller, you guys love when we share behind-the-scenes or uncut looks at what happens here in the building. Another thing you all really enjoy is when we take a more organic approach to highlighting our products – stripped down iPhone shots of things like necklaces or diamonds. (Check our Instagram story highlights if you’re interested in seeing how Stuller does stories.)

Stories are a great channel to showcase things you don’t want living on your feed. Promote things like jewelry sales, new inventory sneak peaks, customer testimonials, etc. The options are endless!

In closing, it’s so important to be up-to-date on social trends, because these are the things that will help you grow your following, and ultimately your customer base! As always, reach out to me if you have any questions/comments/concerns about social media, and get to posting trending content today!

The Perfect Jewelry For Our New “Virtual” Lives

There’s no denying it — life is different than it was two years ago. No matter how much or little you’ve been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, things have certainly changed in society. Adapting to a new norm means a lot of things, like more Zoom conference calls, online dates, virtual weddings, and so many other events that were once otherwise in-person assemblies.

While these types of virtual events are not new by any means, they are certainly more prevalent. When you’re working from home, sometimes the highlight of your day is getting dressed up for a meeting with your boss. And with online dating more popular than ever, the little things like taking the perfect selfie for your profile could mean a world of difference for your confidence.

Whatever the case may be, we are a digital world now, and we need to make the best of it. And that’s why I’m here to help. Take some advice from me, your favorite resident social media savant/Gen Z-er, and invigorate your socially-distanced looks with some of Stuller’s trendiest jewelry!

Virtual Happy Hour

In an effort to adapt to the times, virtual happy hour was invented (coincidentally, this is one of my favorite things to come out of the pandemic). It’s nice to go all out with your favorite outfit and pour yourself a drink to toast your peers from a distance. Pair your look with sleek and sophisticated styles, like diamond ear climbers and intricate necklaces — the perfect pieces to wow your friends from the computer screen!

Even in marketing, we will tune in to a Microsoft Teams meeting with four other people sitting in the same room! Use this as an opportunity to flaunt some staple pieces like diamond studs and stackable rings.

Typically, jewelry is seen as a gift from one lover to another. However, in this day and age, we are buying jewelry for ourselves! Step up your selfie game with some jewelry from our 302 Fine Jewelry collection, sure to catch anyone’s eye. It doesn’t get much better than jewelry that is made by women, for women.

Cyber Weddings

Though nontraditional, cyber weddings are a safe and special way to celebrate your big day. Would you believe me if I said I’ve attended two cyber weddings since last March? They were so much fun! I got to see people from all over the country gather together to celebrate love. Show your love with wedding sets that are just as modern as you are. Even though times aren’t quite the same, we are making the best of the situation. I try my best to look at the silver lining in everything that happens, and though we aren’t quite as interactive with each other, I do believe we’re more connected.

Social Media and Photography Tips for the Holidays

One of the best tools for the budget-conscious jeweler is social media. With very little investment, social platforms are commonly the best way to reach your customer right in the palm of their hand. Eye-catching imagery and content is at the heart of being successful on social.

There is still time to up your social game for the holidays! Here to help you out are Stuller’s social media specialist Hannah Blaine and a Stuller photographer LeeAnn Stephan with social media and photography tips for the holidays.

Stuller’s Stellar Social

Like many of you, we take the holidays very seriously and try to get ahead on our planning and promotions for the holiday season. You can find holiday promotions on our social media accounts as early as October. We rely heavily on the content we create to engage you, our customers, and that can only happen with attention-grabbing photography.

Stuller has a talented team of photographers dedicated to taking photos of jewelry, gemstones, diamonds, and more of our products. They work year-round to make sure our visual content is up-to-date, trendy, and appealing. But these images are not just for us. We encourage you to use them for your own marketing purposes as well!

Interested in taking your own photos of your products? Check out our Stuller Connect live stream from this summer with photographer Daniel Maldonado on the Basics of Photography.

Whether you use our pictures or create your own, we are going to help you break down some social trends and demonstrate how to best use these images to be more profitable for your business.

A Look at Stuller Photography

As we have mentioned, our photography department ever stops working on the next big thing. From catalogs and brochures to web shots and social campaign images, our team is constantly working to stay ahead of the curve. In our studio, we have collected props, papers, and other items of various colors and textures to enhance the products we shoot.

Collecting items like these and using simple lighting setups can really take your product photography to the next level. Our GemLightBox is the perfect investment for taking well-lit, professional photos of your products even with your phone.

But how do we know what images to shoot? We plan our campaigns months in advance, but all you need is a strategy for the upcoming months to know what you need to have prepared. Let’s dive into what you need to be thinking about when creating this strategy.

Creating a Social Strategy for Holiday Success

If you have watched our previous livestream on social media tips, you’ll know that the first thing we recommend to anyone putting together a comprehensive social strategy is to look at your insights. Understanding what posts your audience engages in and when they are online is the foundation to knowing where to start with your plan.

Once you know a little about your customer and how they interact online, plan what you need to promote and when. For example, it would be better for you to specifically push custom jewelry right now while there is still time before the holidays and wait until a few days before Christmas to push the last-minute items you already have in stock. Make sure you have appropriate images to go with your captions that look appealing and make someone want to see more.

Finally, you put that plan into action by scheduling your content ahead of time so that you have less to stress about during the intense selling season. Using free scheduling tools, such as Facebook Creator Studio and Later, will save you a lot of time during a period when time is of the essence.

Giving Attention to Your Visual Brand

Have you given much thought to the visual consistency of the images you are posting? What does your Instagram grid look like? Is there a cohesiveness to your grid that draws people to your brand?

These are questions you should be asking yourself when putting together the images you want to use in your social strategy. A cohesive grid will not only give your customers a feel for your brand, but it will draw in newcomers as new followers and potential new customers. Your grid tells your brand’s story. Customers are drawn to a well-planned and well-executed visual aesthetic.

On Stuller’s Instagram, you will notice a consistent visual look on our grid that follows the stories we push as the seasons and holidays change. But even as small visual nuances in the photos change to fit the season, there is an overall connectivity to our pictures that identify the imagery as Stuller’s brand.

Putting together a consistent and comprehensive social media strategy can be daunting and we are always here to be a resource for you. If you have any questions about social media and photography tips, contact our social media team at Hannah_Blaine@stuller.com.

Join us next week for the final installment of our Holiday Live Learning Series as we talk about gifting diamonds and gemstones.

Social Media Strategy Overhaul Before the Holidays

Alright jewelers, it’s time to suit up. The holidays are quickly approaching. From cleaning your cases, to stocking up on the right tools and product for those holiday projects, there are a plethora of things you can do during this time. I’m here to say this: use this time to reevaluate your social media strategy! Social media can often be put on the back-burner, especially during your busiest months, but it is important to have a good social media strategy in place for the holidays.

Follow along with me as I break down a few tips and tricks on how to revamp your social media strategy.

Monitor Your Insights

When you start looking into your insights, you’ll realize you’ve got a ton of valuable information right before your eyes. Things like demographics, which images perform better, how many people your posts are reaching, and much more are all available to you. You can use this information to inform your future posts. For example, if you notice your photos of engagement rings are performing better than all of your other posts, it’s safe to assume that your audience is interested in engagement rings, and you can push them further on social (but don’t let your posts get too saturated with one type of content!). More engaged posts mean more people see your posts, which mean more people become acquainted with your business.

See the image below. What assumptions can you make based on this data? If you notice, the links we posted didn’t perform as well as our other types of content. This might tell me to post less links and more pictures/videos!

A breakdown of post performance from Stuller’s Facebook insights

Plan Out Your Posts

This one is a hard and tedious task, but trust me when I say that future you will thank past you, especially during the holidays! Take some time out of your day/week/month and plan. Download a monthly calendar from Google, plan which days you’ll post which content, and come up with the copy (marketing word for caption). Utilize popular jewelry hashtags by doing some research, and BAM! You have your social all set up for the next month. It’s harder said than done, but you’ll feel relief when you have a whole month’s worth of social posts done before the second week. This brings me to my next tip…

This is a daily breakdown of our monthly content calendar

Schedule Your Posts

I’ve talked about this before and I’ll talk about it again: schedule your social media posts! Take this time to learn and get a feel for scheduling posts, and get in a habit of doing it. It becomes much easier the more you do it, and before you know it, you’ll be mindlessly scheduling months in advance! At Stuller, we use the scheduling platform Sprout Social, but we recommend either Later or Facebook, which has a publishing platform called Creator Studio that is free for you to use.

A week of Stuller Instagram posts from Later’s platform

And that’s it! Get in the habit of utilizing these tips and tricks so you aren’t falling short on social during the holidays. Read up on some more of my social media blogs here to get you in the social media spirit. Godspeed!

Our Top 5 Looks from the 2020 Emmys

In the pandemic-ridden world we live in, there are numerous facets of life that have had to make adjustments and televised award shows are no exception. The 2020 Emmys took place on September 20th, but viewers noticed some changes to the normal extravagant affair. Rather than gather all nominees and guests in a single location, the award show brought the experience into the nominees’ homes where a camera linked them to the show.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and featuring stars from a variety of television’s best, we were able to enjoy celebrating the on-screen talent many of us have been binge-watching this year. While this year’s Emmys did not include a red carpet event, a selection of stars truly shined in the fashion department. In no particular order, here are some of our favorite looks from the night.

Zendaya

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFXyVryjsUS/

The Euphoria actress experienced a wonderful evening at the Emmys coming in as the youngest actress ever to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Not only did she gain some well-deserved recognition from the Television Academy, she also dazzled the audience with both of her stunning looks.

In her first standout look of the evening, she donned a purple Christopher John Rogers with a matching necklace that was absolutely gorgeous. Her second award-winning ensemble featured a polka-dot and crystal embellished custom Armani Privé gown with subtly matching jewelry.

Steal her look with an amethyst necklace that’s sure to make a statement, or the most scintillating diamond hoops.

Representing the show Ozark, Julia Garner absolutely dazzled us with a vintage-inspired look by Chanel complete with an ivory satin dress, layered pearls, and headband. This 1920’s flapper-reminiscent getup would fit in perfectly in The Great Gatsby and we are in love with it!

Honor Julia by adorning yourself in a pearl necklace and earrings for the ultimate vintage cool-girl moment.

The lack of a red carpet event didn’t stop the Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross from creating her own! And with a look as stunning as hers, why shouldn’t she? Ross was absolutely glowing in a gold Alexandre Vauthier halter gown paired with vintage jewelry.

Keep it classy and cool with some yellow gold metal fashion jewelry, perfect for the coveted #NeckMess look – an ode to Mrs. Ross herself!

The Cast of Schitt’s Creek

View this post on Instagram

With Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy winning their #Emmys tonight, that means our little Canadian show is the first comedy to ~ever~ sweep all four acting categories, and that is absolutely wild 🇨🇦

A post shared by Schitt’s Creek (@schittscreek) on

The real winners of this year’s Emmys are the cast of Schitt’s Creek, who swept all seven comedy-based awards. The cast gathered together in Toronto to accept their awards. While the entire cast had eye-catching outfits for the occasion, we simply have to give a shoutout to Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. O’Hara sported a sequined black Valentino dress with perfectly paired jewelry and a watch. Murphy also wore a Valentino-designed outfit, but the eye-catching part of her look was the “A” necklace that her character Alexis Rose is seen wearing during the show. Congratulations on a great night to this phenomenal cast!

It’s impossible to go wrong with personalized jewelry. Take it from Annie Murphy or her fictional counterpart, Alexis!

Her first look of the night was a floral Oscar de la Renta gown complete with simple, yet elegant emerald drop earrings. She followed it up with another piece by Oscar de la Renta. This time a black and gold dress to commemorate a new year celebration with her castmates.

Always a staple, pay homage to Kerry with some emerald drop earrings, perfect for any occasion!

Honorable Mention: The Hazmat Tuxedo Award Presenters

Executive producer Guy Carrigton and costume designer Katja Cahill chose a tongue-in-cheek approach to a traditional presenter’s tuxedo fit for a pandemic. We were pleasantly shocked to see Emmy awards being distributed by presenters dressed in hazmat suits that resembled tuxedos. Who knows! This safe approach to formal evening wear could one day be the norm.

Round out your tuxedo-inspired hazmat suits with some sophisticated cufflinks.

How to Use Hashtags on Social Media to Market Your Product

Do you remember when you used your first hashtag? For me, as a Gen Zer (or “Zoomer” as I much prefer it), hashtags were always part of my life on social media. In fact, I don’t remember a time where hashtags weren’t a thing. (Don’t lose all faith in me, though – I still know the term “pound sign”, despite probably being the last of the younger generation to know this.)

Anyway, if you aren’t on the hashtag train yet, you’re essentially missing out on free social media reach. So join me as I talk about why you need some hashtags in your life.

What is a hashtag?

Let’s start with some fun history. The hashtag was actually first used by Twitter user Chris Messina. Back in 2007, Chris offered the idea of using the pound sign as a way to group people/places/things together.

Little did Chris know this simple tweet shook how we search phrases on social media forever. Now, Merriam-Webster defines hashtag as “a word or phrase preceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text (such as a tweet)”. Pretty cool how one tweet changed the entirety of the social media landscape, right?

While hashtags can be used on Facebook, I believe they are more useful for your Instagram (and even Twitter) strategies. Let’s talk about why.

Why should I use hashtags?

Well, first and foremost, hashtags are an easy way to show your post to more people. Jewelry industry people, ESPECIALLY bridal/engagement businesses: I’m talking to you. Brides look to social media for inspiration about their weddings, which include their dream ring. With the modern bride emerging, I’ve found that #alternativebride is an effective hashtag to add to modern bridal designs, rings set with salt and pepper diamonds, etc. And that’s just one example. Don’t you want your posts to reach more people?

You can also use hashtags to conduct content research. For example, if you search “stackable rings” in the Instagram search, you can find top performing posts with that hashtag all in one place. This can inspire you to post things that are more similar to what you see under that tag, as those posts are likely performing very well.

Another good use of hashtags is for branding purposes. Urge your customers to use a branded hashtag for your business. For instance, Stuller’s branded hashtag is #HowIStuller, 302 Fine Jewelry’s hashtag is #302onYou, and ever&ever’s hashtag is #EverAndEverBride. Branded hashtags generate a buzz in your local community. Think about it: if one of your customers posts a BEAUTIFUL pair of earrings made by you and hashtags it, their friends may be more likely to see your other work from that hashtag, or even follow you!

Which hashtags should I use?

Typically, hashtags should be relevant to the content you’re posting. However, some hashtags are more popular than others. Instagram only allows up to 30 hashtags on one post, but I’m going to give you some resources that give you popular hashtags when your search one topic.

All-Hashtag

This site is extremely easy to use. All you have to do is enter a phrase (ex. “earrings”) and they give you 30 relevant, popular hashtags you can use on a photo of your earrings.

Later

Later is a scheduling platform (that I recommend you all get on) that has free and cheap monthly subscriptions. With Later, you can use their “suggested hashtag” feature which acts pretty similarly to all-hashtag.com, except you can use this function WHILE scheduling your posts! Disclaimer: the hashtags are a bit different due to the differing algorithms both sites are using.

I cannot recommend Later enough, and their hashtag tool is just a bonus!

And there you have it! Are you ready to start using hashtags? Let me know in the comments below.
