Take a Look Inside the July 2020 CounterSketch Update

CounterSketch Software Blog Header

2020 has been an overwhelming year with lots of change that has forced us to learn how to approach familiar tasks in very different ways. Like building relationships with your customers when you can only see their eyes because a mask obscures the rest of their face. However, I hear from most of our users that you are improvising and learning new ways to solidify your relationships and add value.

CounterSketch has always sought to help the consumer visualize the finished custom design and provide an experience that allows the consumer to be involved in creating one of a kind pieces of jewelry.

The 2020 CounterSketch update continues on a theme of simplifying and improving the user experience without diminishing the consumer’s engagement or excitement.

We are excited to hear how these new features impact your ability to use CounterSketch.

Updated User Interface

CounterSketch is even easier to navigate; you can find what you are looking for and apply filters seamlessly. The fresh look gives you a smoother, more cohesive interaction with the software, fewer clicks, and better results.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Now, you can shop Stuller’s entire inventory of large and melee lab-grown diamonds to add to your custom CounterSketch designs. You are providing a diamond alternative and another price point for your customer to consider.

Render Previews

Render previews allow you to review a draft of your render before completing the entire render to ensure that you have selected the best options for your render. Now, you can see what you are going to render without waiting for the render to complete so you can make adjustments and save time.

Standardized Render sizes for Social Media

Choose the platform where you plan to share your render, and CoutnerSketch will automatically update the size and resolution for the image for that platform, ensuring that it looks impressive on your social page.

Updated Order Screen

The updated order screen helps you see what information still needs to be completed so that you can submit your orders quickly without reviewing options you may not need. We have also enhanced our communication with Stuller’s API for faster pricing.

Curated Collections

Added in March, this feature allows you to merchandise the CounterSketch library so that it reflects your customers and their taste. Create a personalized tile on the CounterSketch start screen to highlight your brand. Behind the tile with your logo, select styles that are prevalent in your business. Never before has it been so easy to adapt CounterSketch to your business.

With lots to see and learn, be sure to take advantage of the CounterSketch playlists on our Gemvision Corp YouTube channel.

MatrixGold Customer Discusses His Experience

Roger Kitchens has seen the jewelry industry change quite a bit during his 40 years in the industry. He’s watched computer-aided design (CAD) become an industry norm and has implemented CAD software into his business so that he can offer custom design. To work on his designs, Roger has used various software, and he currently uses MatrixGold.

I chatted with Roger to learn more about his experience with MatrixGold and the design success it’s brought him.

Roger, thank you so much for speaking with me! Let’s start with a your background. What experience do you have in the jewelry trade?

I started working as a jeweler when I was 19 years old. I am now 69 years old and still working. I’ve worked as bench jeweler for 45 years, doing repairs, fabrication, wax carving, and casting. Ten years ago, I purchased RhinoGold 1.0, opening my path to CAD.

What is your business model? Designing with MatrixGold Roger Kitchens Studio

I work from my home office, creating models for three retail stores. Through email, I receive the sketch, stone information, and specifications. Using cloud storage, the STL files are easily accessed for the store to print, cast, and finish the project. Some models are printed on my LCD Printer and shipped to the store.

Which software do you use?

I purchased Matrix 8 and later Matrix 9, giving me a vast toolbox. In September 2019, I purchased MatrixGold, adding parametric history to my toolbox. Now, MatrixGold is my toolbox.

How does MatrixGold help with your design process and everyday work?

Using online desktop viewing allows me to make real-time changes for my client. Parametric history allows me to make changes without having to recreate the model sections.

Parametric history also allows me to create models in sections, mirroring those sections to create the complete model. I can import parts from my collection and assemble a model. I can easily edit the model, changing finger size, stone sizes, and other variables.

What do you think are top features of MatrixGold?

The user interface offers easy navigation, and the desktop layout is easy to customize.

We create updates based on the customer’s needs. What do you think should be next for MatrixGold?

I miss many features from Matrix 9. The Gem List on Curve is probably the one I used most frequently. Many of my projects are using the customers’ diamonds. I could add stones by individual sizes and counts rather than trying to graduate the stones in MatrixGold.

I’d also like the ability to create more flexibility when using the signet ring builder with control points on the shank curves. Adding a Euro shank outside profile to a cathedral ring rail would also be great.

Stay tuned, Roger. I assure you we are working on a few of those updates and hope to have them in the coming weeks! Thank you for being one of the great designers in our community!

A huge thank you to Roger and his insight into using and working with MatrixGold. For more on Roger’s history in the industry as well as his designs, click here.

CounterSketch Update: New Curated Collections

CounterSketch Software Blog Header

I am excited to introduce the newest feature to CounterSketch®: curated collections. This new feature gives the user autonomy to create the collections that they know will sell in their area.

Currently, there are over 2,495 library models in CounterSketch. Never in the history of the software have we had so many different styles to select from, and each month we add more. While variety is the spice of life, with so many choices, it can sometimes be challenging to find the design you want.

With this in mind, we’ve given users a way to highlight styles that are relevant to their customers. Curated collections allow users to merchandise a selection of library models so that they can easily find the styling that is most relevant to their market.

Here is a brief description of how curated collections works:

Select Your Styles

Begin a search in CounterSketch using categories or filters to find the models you want. Use the session picks checkbox to select the styles you want to include. Once you have selected all of the relevant library models, choose the “add marked designs to portfolio” option and name your portfolio.

CounterSketch Curated Collections Select Styles

Create a Design Tile

Once you have selected the styles for your collection and added them to a portfolio, create a tile for your collection. From the preferences, menu choose “edit design tiles.” Now you can add a new tile to your Start screen that will feature your selection. You can select the shape, size, and title of your tile. Then select an image from stock images or add your own.

CounterSketch Curated Collections Design Tile Interface

Access your collection

Browse your curated collection by clicking on the design tile you created to access your specified models. The collection shows in the search screen, with the title in the breadcrumb and tile image in the header.

CounterSketch Curated Collections Accessing the Collection

Now that you know how you can create as many collections as you wish!

In addition to creating tiles that will link to collections of jewelry, you can also create a tile that will connect to:

  • Web Address: your website to share images of past custom creations
  • Stuller Showcase: other Stuller product that meets the customer’s needs
  • Open Another Program: a point of sale software or just a calculator, so you always have one available
  • Stuller Prototype Collection: a specific group of products

CounterSketch gives you options and simplifies your custom design process. Give your customers choices for the next custom design, either from the entire library or just those curated styles that you know will speak to them. Once you have completed the design, submit your order, and our CAD/CAM services team will handle the rest.

Watch below for more on Curated Collections:

I hope you enjoy Curated Collections and the ability it gives you to personalize your CounterSketch library.  As always, visit our Gemvision website for more on the update.

4 New MatrixGold® Features for Spring

It has been a successful year around the world with MatrixGold!

In the last year, MatrixGold’s new core and dynamic commands have provided a new way to design jewelry. It has been a pleasure to see our customers utilize the new functionalities of the software to speed up their production time.

With MatrixGold being a popular CAD software in jewelry design, we want to continuously offer features to provide state-of-the-art software to our customers. We believe the only way to make good software is by listening to our customers, who spend hours working with the product, and then by putting all these experiences and feedback into developing new MatrixGold features. This month, a new version will be available to users.

Without further ado, we’re excited to present a sample of our new MatrixGold features. Here are four!

New MatrixGold Features for Spring 2020

  • Pavé prongs: You’ll be able to add prongs to a group of stones. Automatically, MatrixGold will add prongs where the spaces between stones are.
  • Manufacturing tools: In just a few clicks, you can get your design ready for 3D printing and then casting.
  • Animation studio: We improved the animation studio as the move maker from what you will be able to make movies from frames.
  • New profile editor functionalities: The profile editor is a tool used to personalize your jewelry. We improved and added to its functionality so you can create your own profiles and save them to use later.

Visit the Gemvision YouTube for a look at these features firsthand.

Even as we announce this new version, we are looking ahead to JCK Las Vegas in early June to meet all our customers with even more new tools.

Happy designing!

6 New MatrixGold® 2019 Features

This past JCK, we at Gemvision unveiled our newest CAD software: MatrixGold® 2019.

Since then, we’ve gathered feedback from users and listened to their needs and wants. All of that feedback has come to a head in the newest version release of our most powerful CAD software to date.

Parametric Workflows

This was our most anticipated new feature!

Parametric workflows let you link all of the steps used on any design using the dynamic tools. Once you’ve finished your design, you can return to any prior steps to change the settings you used while designing.

By changing some settings to any of the steps, you will achieve a totally different design afterward — significantly cutting down your work time.

Pavé Tool

With the new pavé tool, you can add numerous stones at once with just one click.

Signet Ring

Many users reached out to us for a signet ring feature, and now it’s ready.

Ring Resizer

Do you have design files lying around from years of working with Matrix® or RhinoGold? With MatrixGold 2019’s new ring resizer, you can resize any ring in just two clicks.

Render Studio

Good renders are often essential for marketing efforts and for closing the sale. With the new render studio, you can get realistic renders that’ll help ramp up your sales.

Profile Editor

If you want to create your own designs from scratch, the new profile editor will help you personalize your jewelry with no limits.

With this update’s slew of new features, you’ll spend more time doing what you do best: creating intricate, meaningful jewelry designs. Comment below to let us know what you think!

See What’s New with Stuller’s MatrixGold Essentials Software

MatrixGold Essentials Blog Header

Welcome to MatrixGold Essentials

Gemvision®, a Stuller company, launched MatrixGold Essentials™ earlier this year— a powerful software combination built for custom design. “With the speed of technology improvements in today’s world, we know we have to continue to stay at the forefront of software development,” says Bryan Morgan, Stuller’s Chief Operating Officer. “This new software will provide our customers with the most powerful tool they can use for customization and design creation.”

History in the Making

Did you know Gemvision has spent over twenty years developing Matrix and RhinoGold? This legacy of knowledge and expertise has culminated into a brand new application that merges functionality with high capability. MatrixGold Essentials blends the advanced abilities of Matrix and RhinoGold with CounterSketch’s user-friendly interface.

In short, this new software will simplify your work, resulting in greater productivity. That’s because MatrixGold Essentials runs on a Rhinoceros 6 CAD engine, allowing users more power while providing speed for greater responsiveness, presentation, display, and more. Plus, we estimate the learning curve will be slashed in half thanks to the new software’s ease of use.

See What’s New

Here are just a few new features that make MatrixGold Essentials so easy to use—

Parametric History Workflow

Arguably the most important piece of this new software, MatrixGold’s parametric tools keep track of every move you make within the software. Now, you can simply backtrack to any prior step in your design process, modify it, and watch as the software reconfigures the design. With each step recorded, you can quickly alter and adjust your creations without losing progress. This will be a major timesaver.

New Search Functionality

An enhanced ribbon toolbar promises greater usability. Looking for a specific tool but can’t remember just where the icon is? Use the robust search function in the top right corner of your screen to display a list of filter results. Also, by clicking the context menu button or pressing the F6 key, you’ll see a selection of actions based on the geometry you’ve selected.

5 CounterSketch® Design Options Everyone Should Know

CounterSketch Design Features Blog Header

As CounterSketch users know, each design is fully customizable with a specific set of options — sometimes called sliders — located on the left side of the screen. These features let you adjust each model to meet your customer’s needs. The average CounterSketch design library has 37 sliders to choose from, and each list of sliders is unique to that specific jewelry style.

CounterSketch Design Features Ring Screenshot

The Gemvision Development Team recently did an 18-month study screening customer-submitted designs to see which CounterSketch design options got used most frequently. The top two design options were not surprising: finger size and center gem shape. After all, almost every ring needs updating for these two attributes.

However, the next five CounterSketch design options were not as predictable as you might think. It is these five features I want to focus on these five features here. The great thing about these most-used design options is that they center on the consumer’s comfort and budget.

This list of top five CounterSketch design options includes why they could be important to your next customer:

1. Center Gem Height

CounterSketch Design Features Gem Height

The height of a center diamond can have a big impact on how the ring wears and how others perceive the diamond. The higher the stone, the more prominently it stands out because you positioned it to receive light from all angles. Conversely, the lower the diamond sits, the less likely it is to get caught on other objects, eventually requiring re-tipping. Consider the wearer’s activities and preferences when setting center gem height. If the wearer of the ring is a nurse who puts gloves on and off several times each day, for example, a lower center gem is probably the better choice.

2. Shank Profile Top Width

CounterSketch Design Features Shank Profile Top Width

Shank profile top width can have a big impact on the price and the overall look of the ring. Based on the center stone size, the band may need to be wider or narrower to provide balance. In several CounterSketch design models, accent gem sizes directly correlate with top profile width to maintain proper design proportions. Increasing the width of the band could increase the size of the accent stones and possibly the cost. It is important to weigh all of these factors when designing with your customer to select the right width for their design and budget.

3. Accent Gem End Point

CounterSketch Design Features Gems End

As accent stones reach farther around the ring, they impact price and comfort. For customers on a budget, suggest decreasing how far down the accent gems to lower the stone and setting costs. These small cost savings will also prove beneficial when ordering the wedding band, especially if it has matching accent gems. Most customers understand the benefit of spending less on diamonds that go unseen since they’re in-between fingers. For more on comfort, see point five below.

4. Shank Bottom Profile Width

CounterSketch Design Features Shank Profile Bottom Width

In concert with shank profile top width, the bottom shank profile width allows you to taper the width of the ring to fit more comfortably on your customer’s finger. A band that maintains the same with all the way around the finger can be uncomfortable when shaking hands or making a fist. Create a smaller bottom profile width for a more comfortable fit. As in the above examples, narrowing the band’s lower width can also decrease the overall weight and lower the ring’s cost.

5. Shank Side Thickness

CounterSketch Design Features Shank Side Thickness

Side thickness also deals with the wearers’ comfort. Again, when shaking hands, people often squeeze your index and little fingers together. If the ring has a significant side thickness, it makes greetings uncomfortable. It is important to balance this concern with the overall durability of the ring. Stuller’s CAD/CAM Services recommends a minimum of 1.7mm side thickness for all rings.

You may already use these CounterSketch design options to your advantage. However, if not, consider them on your next project. Visit these design aspects and weigh the pros and cons of each with your customer. This will prove valuable to your customer and flex your expertise as a jeweler. Let CounterSketch provide an additional layer of customization and a better customer experience in both designing and wearing that special ring.

Around the World with RhinoGold Software

RhinoGold software Blog Header

There is nothing more enriching than meeting face-to-face with customers on their own turf. Whether it’s new faces or new places, visiting everyone — from independent jewelers to large manufacturers — provides better feedback than even the busiest day at the office. After all, firsthand experiences are more beneficial than secondhand accounts.

And while globalization provides endless access to all sorts of information, I’m most fascinated to realize that creativity, tradition, and beliefs are not universal. Every corner of the world has its own way of creating, manufacturing, and selling unique jewelry.

Over the last six months, the Gemvision RhinoGold software team visited jewelers from all over the world, to gain a better understanding of jewelry trends specific to their regions. Here is a brief overview of our experiences around the globe.

JCK Las Vegas • June 4th

It is always a pleasure to attend JCK Las Vegas, meeting people from both North and South America.

We noticed a wide variety of jewelry-making styles in the U.S., which poses a unique challenge for the RhinoGold software team. We want to meet the needs of all of our customers from engagement and graduation rings to free-form designs.

In turn, we offer tools and solutions for a variety of products, from cathedral and signet rings, dynamic profiles, advanced split shanks, along with countless different setting types. People tend to base their ideas on what they find on the Internet, and eventually pass their findings to us.

We’re always listening so our developers can incorporate these helpful suggestions into upcoming RhinoGold software releases.

Indonesia • July 10th

After three intensive weeks of working on all the requests gathered from JCK Las Vegas, we packed up and traveled to Indonesia.

Here, we discovered another dimension in jewelry trends. In Indonesia, a 1,000-employee company is considered small. After all, a country with over 200 million people is a great place to set up a jewelry-making factory, especially since nearly the entire populace has a passion for wearing jewelry.

We found that the weight of jewelry is a big concern in Indonesian designs. Jewelers want RhinoGold software to help them create larger, yet lighter pieces. Wire Rings or pendants with wires at 0.2mm thickness are common. And of course, price is as much a factor there as it is in the states.

Even if a customer already uses CAD, man, you gotta see their eyes when they see the Dynamic Pattern and Dynamic Tiling in action. We just saved them two hours’ work in just a few clicks” – RhinoGold Software Developer

Applying these tools to different surfaces enables our customers to make intricate, unique designs that would be nearly impossible to fabricate by hand.

Sydney • August 26th

You never know what the weather has in store on our global adventures. We went from warm days in Indonesia to wintry ones in Sydney.

The Sydney show was held at Darling Harbor, making it much more convenient for our customers to visit us. Again, as in Las Vegas, Australia’s big business is bridal! Our software must accommodate everything from engagement rings, three-stone rings, to eternity bands to fulfill Australian customers’ needs.

On top of the specific tools needed to design bridal jewelry, our customers were very interested in our Elements Libraries. This capability allows users to choose from thousands of different models and adapt those models to their specific needs. This process is incredibly simple and does not require users to be tech-savvy. Even on the first day using it, any designer can create a custom piece!

Oriol takes flight!

India • September 6th

Two weeks later, it was back to the airport for us! This time, we traveled to South India to visit the Coimbatore Jewelry Show and toured a few large factories in the area.

The Indian style is very particular. It’s called ‘Temple’ and incorporates huge necklaces, earrings, belts, and more. Because these pieces are so big, our customers asked for tools to lighten their jewelry designs. They use intricate religious themes in their jewelry, which means deploying Clayoo. The RhinoGold organic modeler is a must-have when it comes down to designing organic shapes.

These customers were impressed with several tools including the Dynamic Pattern and Tiling and our gem builders. These tools let customers configure models to set stones on wax and cast it directly.

We visited many big factories and received a lot of input from our customers, most of which will be included the next software release.

Don’t forget about RhinoGold training!

HK Jewelry Show • September 15th

The Hong Kong trade show reflects the city itself: customers hustle about in search of something special. It is the largest, busiest, and most international of all the trade shows we visited. Whether you’re looking for tools, equipment, heavy machinery, gems, mountings, findings, or finished pieces, the Hong Kong Jewelry Show is well worth the visit!

While 3D Scanners are not designed to create detailed rings, they can be used to add gems to a piece originally made by hand. Thanks to RhinoGold tools like Retopology, it’s easier than ever to use scanned data to make adjustments to any piece. In a customer’s recent project featured below, a broken Ganesha sculpture was imported into RhinoGold where we were able to repair its lost right arm. In the near future, we expect 3D Scanners will improve significantly and be able to work on detailed rings. Right now, they offer an option for jewelry repair and small modifications.

Expojoya Guadalajara, Mexico • October 3rd

As we draw closer to the year’s end, it is always a luxury to visit our friends in Mexico. Again, we toured another region with a unique style, another market, and another need for RhinoGold software. We found a wide variety of styles in Mexico – from fancy gold and diamond jewelry to trendy silver designs.

And of course, THE FOOD!

Traveling allows us to try all sorts of cuisine from every region. In Mexico, it’s rice, seafood, and meat for dinner. And for breakfast, it’s scrambled eggs and sandwiches, along with spicy soups and dumplings. The people enjoy exotic fruits and even stranger sweets served with red wine or “chai”.

Every region has its unique cuisine just as it has its own style of jewelry. Every “jewelry chef innovates and creates according to their skills, beliefs, and traditions. This is what makes jewelry authentic, original, and valuable.

We’re blessed to learn from the artisans who use our program everyday and help us make RhinoGold software its very best. In fact, this is what makes RhinoGold so popular. The software grows as we listen to our customers’ needs. CAD technology keeps businesses ahead of the curve to enhance productivity and create more opportunities, as we pave the way to success!
