Celebrate National Nutrition Month 2020

We're highlighting a few general tips and ways Stuller helps associates stay healthy

The theme for National Nutrition Month 2020 is Eat Right, Bite by Bite.

Diet.  One word, four letters, so many different definitions.

We have all heard of calorie restricting diets, carbohydrate restricting diets, Keto, Paleo, Mediterranean, Adkins, and a hundred others. Why are there so many? Because humans are all unique, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Nutrition. One word, nine letters, so many different ideas.

Diet and nutrition do not have to go hand in hand. You can be nutritious and not be on a strict diet. Nutrition is about eating the right food most of the time and the right amount. The “right” food can simply be defined as whole foods that are unprocessed, such as meat, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts, beans, seeds, and whole grains.

We should also be eating everything in moderation and in appropriate portions. Too much of one thing, even if it is a “good” thing, can be counterproductive. Also, you don’t have to never eat your favorite dessert or guilty pleasure (French fries for me), but just limit how frequently you indulge.

Health-First at Stuller

The struggle with diets and nutrition is that there is so much information out there and so many ways of achieving healthy nutrition, it can be overwhelming. Luckily, Bite by Bite falls in line with Stuller’s approach to nutrition education for our associates.

I may be biased, but the bittersweet truth is that South Louisiana has some of the best food in the world! From crawfish étouffée to pecan pie and momma’s fried chicken, it is hard to always meet your nutrition goals with all the temptation from our Cajun culture.

Luckily, Stuller offers programs and tools to help our associates learn the meaning of nutrition, set a plan, and stay on track for success!

Real Appeal® Weight Loss Program

One program offered to associates for free through Stuller is called Real Appeal. This is a year-long program that allows participants to set individual goals with a health coach, and work with the coach as well as other participants all over the country in a group setting, to achieve success. Upon registering, participants will receive a success kit in the mail with goodies (scale, blender, exercise equipment, etc.) to assist them along their journey.

Then, participants meet virtually with their health coach and group once a week for 26 weeks, then monthly for the remaining six months. The program also includes access to a food and activity tracker, group chat, goal-tracking system, integration with third-party apps, video education, and much more. In the three years that Stuller has offered the program, 213 health plan members enrolled, and they lost a combined 794 pounds!

You don’t have to commit to a certain diet or learn everything there is to know about nutrition. You just need to find your motivation to strive for good nutrition, lean on professionals to help educate you, and start Bite by Bite — and there could not be a better time to start doing it than for National Nutrition Month.
