I got the chance to speak with Elysha and ask her some questions about her journey as a jewelry artisan as well as her personal life. Learn more about Elysha and her winning design below!

Congratulations, Elysha, on being named the Change Up Challenge Champion! Before we talk about the beautiful ring you made, tell me a little about yourself.

I was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard, a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. I have always had a love for art and nature and growing up near the ocean gave me an endless amount of inspiration. I knew that I wanted to pursue art early on and attended The Massachusetts College of Art and Design where I received a Bachelors of Fine with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. After my studies at The Massachusetts College of Art, I was accepted as a resident artist in the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology. During this program, I focused on metalsmithing while incorporating organic materials like handmade paper and found objects. The visual language of pods, cells, and other growth patterns became common themes I continue to reference. I maintain a studio practice steeped both in traditional metalsmithing alongside a sculptural approach to wearable art. By taking these ideas out of their normal context, I invite the viewer or the adorned to appreciate the natural beauty around us.

Photos by Joe Mikos and Maggie Shannon

That’s incredibly interesting! How did you get your start in the jewelry industry?

I got into the jewelry industry working as a bench jeweler for various jewelers and artists over the years but really focused on honing my traditional metalsmithing skills working as a goldsmith for CBstark Jewelers, a full-service jewelry store in my hometown. I have always had an appreciation for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail so learning, repairing, and creating custom work for a company with over 50 years in the industry really helped me develop my skills as a fine jeweler and made me want to create heirloom pieces, like engagement rings. I had a few friends reach out to me wanting custom engagement and various other custom pieces and this part of my studio practice has continued to grow over the last few years.

Sounds like you’ve had some amazing opportunities to do great work. Let’s dive into your winning design! Tell me the story behind this ring.

Change Up Challenge Winning Design

This ring was a very special project for me personally because it was designed for my lifelong friend. The design process flowed easily because I knew her so well, I was able to generate pages of sketches based on a few ring styles I knew she had liked. This gave us the opportunity to pick and choose elements from a number of options and combine them into the perfect final design. Her partner wanted the symbolism of the sun and moon, so I incorporated elements that represented the phases of the moon and sun rays. We wanted an alternative gemstone for the center, something durable but colorful. She is a fine art painter so adding color was an important design element! We went with a beautiful Ceylon Star Sapphire cabochon, which fit perfectly with our celestial theme. Lastly, I incorporated 3 small diamonds. Three is a divine number, the first to which the meaning “all” was given and used here to represent themes of time and of life: past, present, future; birth, life, death; body, mind, spirit, beginning, middle, end.

Wow! There is so much meaning in this ring and it really shows in the design. Can you tell me about the design process of the ring?

The process of creating this ring was tricky, there were a lot of small components and the majority of it was entirely hand fabricated from sheet metal. The center stone was an odd cut but I was able to modify a heavy oval bezel setting from Stuller and used their platinum bezels for the diamonds to make my life a little easier. Once I had those parts assembled the last components to solder were the small celestial motifs and finish with the stone setting. The diamonds were tricky to set so I modified some broken burs to fit perfectly in hard-to-reach areas.

That’s so creative and I’m sure your friend loves the ring. Before we wrap up, tell me a little about your life outside of work.

Outside of work I really enjoy being outdoors, I love to garden and take care of plants. I like to walk and observe nature slowly and collect things of interest from the beaches and the woods. I also love a good bike ride to pick up the pace. I do yoga to help keep my body in a good state for bench work. I also like getting cozy and listening to music and sketching or watching some good sci-fi and fantasy; the creativity of others can be a wonderful source of inspiration as well!

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Elysha! Congratulations again on your winning design. We at Stuller are so happy to see the beautiful piece you’ve created with our findings and can’t wait to see what else you create! Make sure to follow along on Elysha’s journey by following her on Instagram and visiting her website at www.elyshajoymetals.com.

Finding Inspiration: Get Creative With Hinged Bails

Whether you’re creating a custom piece of jewelry or enhancing an existing piece, a topic of conversation many jewelers have with customers is about versatility. Perhaps the piece is versatile in style and goes with many different looks. Perhaps there is a feature in the piece that allows it to transform with different stylings. Regardless, proving the flexibility of a piece can oftentimes be an excellent selling point. Let’s talk about an easy way to add versatility to chains: hinged bails.

Finding Inspiration is a campaign to inspire the inner designer in every jeweler. We hope to spark a conversation among artisans within our community and share the creative work being done. Let’s dive into our next installment of this series and see everything you can accomplish with hinged bails.

Hinged Bails: Versatility with Style

From a functionality perspective, the hinged bail is great for jewelers and consumers of any experience level. With the hinge, there is no need for a bench jeweler or tools to easily utilize.

Varieties in size and ease of use make hinged bails perfect to work with any chain. For example, you can connect two chains together to create a more layered look, add charms and dangles for personalization, turn a necklace into a bracelet, and even use the bail as the necklace center.

Choose from our three hinged bail styles to suit your needs.

Change It Up

Have you thought of adding findings to your merchandising and sales strategy? When making the sale, unique features like a hinged bail can make it easier to start a conversation about a piece and add value. Talk to your customer about different things they can do with their jewelry using a hinged bail. Here are some of our suggestions.

  • Change up jewelry staples like the classic pearl strand to make trendy bracelets.
  • Connect chains and pearls together to add interesting combinations.
  • Connect two pearl strands together with pops of color for an eye-catching pairing.

By having examples of these fun ways to use hinged bails within your displays will inspire your customers and can lead to additional sales. Customers are looking to create unique stacks with their jewelry. Adding the hinged bail into their collection will give them options that help them stand out.

Finding Inspiration: A Custom Designed Mother’s Pendant

As jewelers, we have the opportunity to provide our customers with something completely unique and meaningful – something they will enjoy and cherish for a lifetime. Being with customers for great milestones and commemorative occasions is truly something special. Elizabeth Parker with Curt Parker Jewelers recently had the opportunity to share her experience of crafting a one-of-a-kind piece for a customer that takes those special moments and allows them to be with the customer forever.

Finding Inspiration is a campaign to inspire the inner designer within every jeweler and provide a spark of creativity for artisans throughout the jewelry industry. We are always in awe of what our customers are doing with Stuller findings and how they make unique pieces of jewelry. In this installation of Finding Inspiration, we take a look at the piece made by Curt Parker Jewelers and the story behind such a beautiful piece of art.

Curt Parker Jewelers: The Beginning

curt parker jewelers

Elizabeth Parker and her husband Curt have been in the jewelry business together since 1976; however, this was not always their profession. When they got married, Curt was a design engineer and Elizabeth was a college professor. Shortly after their wedding, Curt decided he wanted to switch careers and become a trade jeweler. Elizabeth supported this decision, and it didn’t take long for her to join him in this new endeavor.

Although a teacher by trade at the time, Elizabeth was no stranger to jewelry design.

“I had started designing jewelry when I was 10 years old. I would make pieces and go door to door in my neighborhood selling them,” Elizabeth said.

Throughout her schooling, she had intentions to pursue an art degree when the time came to go to college. However, fear of not being able to support herself on a career in art pushed her to choose teaching. But as you can see, Elizabeth is an example of how our dreams sometimes have a way of coming back to us unexpectedly.

In the beginning, Curt and Elizabeth operated their jewelry business out of the basement of their home for 8 years before establishing their first brick and mortar location. After 20 years they moved into a larger free-standing location in St. Louis, Missouri, where they remain today.

“We have been doing almost all of our finding work with Stuller since our beginning,” Elizabeth added. “We do a lot of work with findings where we will take the basic pieces, like a basket setting, and create an unusual or different top that is unique to us.”

They have been Stuller customers for more than 35 years and are recipients of 13 national and international awards for jewelry design.

Close to a Mother’s Heart

curt parker jewelers

For the specific piece we are highlighting, it all began with a custom request from a loving mother. In January of this year, a customer met with Elizabeth for her assistance in making a mother’s piece to commemorate the love she has for her family. She wanted the piece to include the birthstones of her husband, herself, her son, her daughter, and her daughter-in-law. Other than that detail, she left a large part of the design work up to Elizabeth.

From there, Elizabeth got to work. Because the customer is a gardener, she used a flower as inspiration for this piece. The final piece resembles a top-down view of a blooming flower in a pot where the stones are the petals.

curt parker jewelers

The stones include 9x6mm oval-cut Aquamarine, Peridot, Amethyst, Rhodalite Garnet, and a 7mm Japanese Akoya Pearl. The stones are set on a 14K white gold pear-shaped setting with a scroll design (1904). The piece also included four setting strips (1061) set with 1.5 carats of diamonds. The bail (184) was added to connect the pendant to a chain. All metal was finished in rhodium plating solution (45-4142) to reduce tarnishing.

The findings used in this piece perfectly complemented the stones and design. For example, if you look closely at the settings used to hold the stone (1904), the scroll design resembles a flower. Even the tiniest details in the findings used in a piece can bring the whole piece together.

1904 1061 184

“We have developed our findings assortment over the years to include a wide variety of offerings so that jewelers and designers like Elizabeth are able to provide their customers with the piece of their dreams,” says Molly Kowalski, Stuller findings product manager. “In a custom piece, everything should feel cohesive in the design. The findings used set the foundation so make sure you have exactly what you need. Don’t forget that our team is here to help!”

Elizabeth’s Helping Hand

Elizabeth worked diligently to provide her customer with a piece to keep her family close to her heart. Along the way, Stuller was with her to help with any obstacles that came up.

“The biggest challenge was finding stones that fit a color palette,” she said.

Coordinating five gemstones of differing colors can be quite the challenge. However, Stuller’s Special Order Services worked with Elizabeth to hand-select stones in hues that complemented each other.

In the end, Elizabeth created a beautiful pendant her customer was thrilled with and is sure to wear with pride. Elizabeth was also careful to design the pendant with space to include future expansions to the family. Her customer’s family story is not yet complete, and Elizabeth will be there to assist her in telling that future tale.

Work Inspired

Stories like Elizabeth’s is a large part of why Stuller continues our work today. A jeweler can provide a customer with something that truly touches the heart, and we want to be there every step of the way. Finding Inspiration: Modified Shanks and Settings

As a jeweler, one of the most important things you can do is provide your customer with a piece that is unique and catered to their specific style. As we kick off Stuller’s March Bridal Madness, we wanted to spark your inspiration with how we have curated our findings collections to include modifications on similar styles so you can find exactly what you need for your customer. Customization is key when creating one-of-a-kind engagement rings. Giving your customer that customization factor is made so much easier when you have options.

Finding Inspiration seeks inspire the designer in every jeweler and connects the pieces that bring out the creativity in artisans and designers throughout the jewelry industry. We want to help you create unique and personalized pieces for your customer using Stuller findings. By looking at the variations within our shanks and settings, you are one step away from building your own branded line of engagement rings.

Modifications of a Simple Shank

What do we mean when talking about these modifications and variations within the findings line? Let’s begin with a simple diamond accented peg shank (SH447). There is so much you can do with this ring, such as adding a preferred setting and pairing it with the perfect band. But before we look at those finishing touches, decide if that shank is what you want.

If you like the simple and classic design of the accented shank, but are looking for a different profile or detail, there are options. The findings line carries variations of this design in rope (SH861), milgrain (SH858), knife edge (SH859), flat (SH870), and half-round (SH810). We are making it easy for jewelers to offer customization by developing product with the same geometry but slight design modifications to fit different customers’ wants and needs.

Modifications of a Simple Setting

Now that you’ve thought about what kind of shank you want to start with, consider what settings fit the design preferences of your customer. Just like the shanks, we are expanding upon our best-selling settings to include more shapes, sizes, and new design elements.

Keeping with a simple design, begin with a sculptural-inspired peg setting (28487). We have developed other settings based on this sculptural design to include a claw prong version (29228), a version with a gallery rail (2000475), a claw prong and gallery rail version (2000340), and a version with an accented gallery rail (2000365).

By mixing and matching these styles, you can not only create a personalized piece, but potentially your own branded line of engagement rings! There is so much more you can do with findings to modify similar styles and create something new. Get started at Stuller.com/Findings!

If you’re interested in bringing your customer into the customization process, Stuller offers the perfect prototype selling system for you to integrate in your business. Micro Bezels Make for a Subtle Statement

Finding Inspiration: Personalization With Petite Pavé

At Stuller, we are looking forward to spending this month celebrating love with our customers. Another busy holiday for jewelers, Valentine’s Day provides excellent opportunities for you to help your customers find unique pieces that help them express themselves or create a meaningful gift for someone special. The best pieces are those that are one-of-a-kind, but the process to make unique pieces does not have to be time consuming or complex.

Finding Inspiration is a campaign to inspire the designer in every jeweler. Using findings that you see every day, you can create the most beautiful pieces that are personalized for your customer. Have you heard of our petite pavé dangle collection? This assortment of dangles showcases personalization with letters and numbers, family and friendship with birthstones, and individuality with a variety of symbols. Combine these components with earring backs, hoops, wires, chains, and other findings to create a piece they’ll never forget.

Need help finding your own inspiration? We have you covered with four different ways to use petite pave dangles to create unique pieces of personalized jewelry.

Upgrade a Simple Hoop

A simple endless hoop (625) is a beautiful statement by itself but take it a step further by adding a personal flare. Easily slip on a dangle, such as an adorable bee dangle (2000939), and you have a new statement that tells a story. Be sure to show your customers how effortless it is to slide on new dangles to change up the look.

Create a Unique Drop Earring

As seen in our Valentine’s Day Gift Guide, you can add any petite pave dangle – such as a simple heart dangle (2000942) – to an ear wire (2000701) and suddenly you have a distinct new drop earring customized just for your customer.

Tell a Story With a Personalized Necklace

Using a split ring (OV2), switch out letter dangles (2000931) with ease on our new threader chain (CH1104) to make the perfect customized necklace. With a set of dangles, customers can tell a new story every day by exchanging the dangle on the chain.

Think Outside the Box With Stopper Beads

Another way to easily add dangles to a chain is by getting creative and using our new stopper beads as a bail (2001147). They keep things fresh and make individual necklace. For example, combine a birthstone dangle (2000898), a letter dangle (2000931), and a lotus flower dangle (2001057) to create an intriguing and personal story with meaning for your customer.

Save the Day With Petite Pavé

As you can see, there are endless options when creating simple, yet meaningful pieces with the petite pave dangle collection. Leveraging this collection is a great way to get repeat customers that are looking to expand their own assortment as well as helps you build a relationship with your customer. Make sure to show your customer just how easy it is to create multiple looks with just a few components and impress them with your sense of style.

Share Your Inspiration

Our community of craftsmen, designers, bench jewelers, and artisans is what Finding Inspiration is all about! You inspire us every day and we want to tell others about your creativity. Be sure to share on social media how you have used Stuller findings to craft unique solutions and one-of-a-kind pieces for your customers. Finding Inspiration: Redesign and Repair

While many are still recovering from a busy holiday season, we know jewelers are diving headfirst into repair season. This month will bring plenty of repairs to your doorstep, which will be an opportunity for you to find inspiration in how to improve the functionality of your customers’ pieces. Embrace your inner artisan and think of ways you can make your customer happy with a repair that makes their life easier.

Finding Inspiration is a campaign to inspire the designer in every bench jeweler. This inspiration is not restricted to the creation of new pieces, but also to infuse your creativity in your repair work or other existing pieces. This month’s feature explores using this creativity in small, but meaningful ways.

Chain Components: Finding the Missing Link With These Creative Solutions

Repairs are more than simply fixing a piece of jewelry. They are the ultimate representation of your brand and your craft. A repair is also a prime opportunity to elevate your brand experience by infusing a little creativity into how you choose to approach the job at hand. Using a few of our new chain components, we present three new ways you can enhance a piece using Stuller findings.

Chain Extenders: Provide Value With Versatility

Chain length contributes significantly to the overall styling of any necklace. As you receive chain repairs this year, why not show them an adjustable chain extender (2001102:102S; 2001103:102:S)? Featured in our most recent issue of From the Bench, this little add-on provides your customer’s piece with versatility making it easier for them to mix and match any given chain with other necklaces to create a one-of-a-kind look. To get inspired by the potential stylings and to encourage your customers, check out the #neckmess hashtag on Instagram where you will find thousands of layered necklace looks.

Magnetic Clasps: Create Simple Solutions

If your customer is struggling to easily put on their bracelet or necklace, we have a solution for you. You can assist by recommending a magnetic clasp (28506:1010:P; 23714:1006:S). Our wide range of clasps vary in both style and strength. We also have styles with spring rings already attached so your customer can add or remove the clasp all on their own. A simple solution can be the difference that makes your customer enjoy wearing their jewelry more often.

Chain Tags: Add a Personal Touch

Chain tags notate the metal quality of the chain, but they could also be used to personalize a piece. Use one of our various engravable chain tags (23849:60003:S; 23848:60002:S; 2000852:1000:S) to engrave your customer’s initials, leave a memorable date, or even brand with your logo. Taking this extra step is an excellent way to further provide meaning and value to the piece.
