The History and Meaning of August Birthstones

Peridot

Peridot, with its vibrant green apple hue, has a history that dates back thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians referred to it as the gem of the sun, believing it had protective powers against nightmares and evil spirits. Peridot is often associated with light and energy due to its radiant color, particularly when it glows in the sunlight. In Hawaiian culture, Peridots are believed to be the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, symbolizing renewal and the volcanic origin of the stone itself. Throughout history, Peridot has been a symbol of strength, healing, and positive energy.

Spinel

Spinel is often mistaken for other gemstones due to its wide range of colors. Historically, Spinel was often confused with Ruby and Sapphire. Up until the late 18th century, all red gemstones were classified as Rubies until effective testing and the field of gemology made it possible to distinguish between the two. Spinels that have been confused for Rubies most notably include the Timur Ruby and the Black Prince’s Ruby, 361-carat and 170-carat Spinels, respectively, that are set in the British Crown Jewels.

Spinel has been revered for its brilliance and durability, symbolizing clarity, renewal, harmony, and hope. It was once believed to remedy blood loss and inflammatory diseases. Its rich palette of colors has made it a favorite among royalty and gemstone enthusiasts. In modern times, Spinel is celebrated for its unique beauty and versatility.

Did You Know?

Not only are Peridot and Spinel the August birthstones, but they are used to mark other special occasions as well. Peridot is the zodiac birthstone for Gemini and is used to celebrate the 16th wedding anniversary. Spinel is the zodiac birthstone for Aquarius and is used to celebrate the 65th wedding anniversary.

How to Care for August Birthstones

Peridot

Peridot is a member of the olivine mineral species. It has a Mohs hardness rating of 6.5–7 and a toughness rating of Fair to Good, which means it’s fairly durable, but should be handled with care. Peridot is stable with long-term exposure to light but is sensitive to rapid temperature changes and harsh chemicals. Avoid using Peridot with ultrasonic and steam cleaners as these methods will damage the stone. Instead, warm water and dish soap with a soft cloth will work.

Spinel

Members of the Spinel mineral species have a Mohs hardness rating of 8 and a Good toughness rating. This makes it a perfectly durable gemstone for daily jewelry wear. Although stable with long-term exposure to light and contact with chemicals, avoid exposing the gemstone to heat. Spinel is usually safe with ultrasonic and steam cleaners.

Options With August Birthstones

Peridot

Peridot is available in a large variety of faceted cuts and sizes. One of the biggest benefits of Peridot is that it is typically eye-clean with excellent clarity, which makes it popular for statement pieces. It can also be found in a cabochon cut that can showcase the stone’s unique internal characteristics and lively color.

Spinel

Spinel comes in a remarkable array of colors, including red, blue, pink, and black. This variety allows for creative and diverse designs. Spinel is often faceted to enhance its brilliance and color depth. Some Spinels can exhibit phenomena like asterism (star effect) or a color-change effect, adding to their allure.

Choosing August Birthstone Jewelry

When selecting Peridot or Spinel jewelry, consider the quality of the gemstone. Both stones are prized for their gorgeous colors. Peridots that are vibrant green will be more valuable than ones that are slightly more yellow or brown in hue. The green of Peridot pairs best with yellow gold.

Spinel is mostly sought after for its vivid red, cobalt blue, and intense pink colors. However, with the options available, there is plenty of variety. If you choose a Spinel with a warm color tone, consider setting it in yellow gold. If you choose a Spinel with a cool color tone, consider setting it in white gold or platinum. Pink and purple Spinel also looks stunning in rose gold.
