Introducing the 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta
“This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.” – The Pantone® Color Institute
As we know, entering a new year welcomes endless possibilities — a fresh start, exciting opportunities, and the courage to boldly reinvent our mindsets and environment. What better way to celebrate than with the latest announcement from the Pantone® Color Institute on the 2023 Color of the Year?
When we look back to past shades, the Color of the Year has always been deeply inspired by collective experience: 2020 showed unconventionality and welcomed Classic Blue, 2021 powered through adversity with Illuminating and Ultimate Gray, and recently, Pantone created a never-before-seen shade, Very Peri, to encourage optimism in moving forward.
Through vigorous and expansive research, experts at Pantone determine each Color of the Year by not only considering style or trend projections but also the state of current, cultural significance — and, to tell a story.
The color we select to be our Pantone Color of the Year is bigger than one region or one sector of design. It is a color we see crossing all areas of design; a color that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude on the part of the consumers, a color that will resonate around the world, a color that reflects what people are looking for, a color that can hope to answer what they feel they need.

As we start 2023 with a newly selected shade, Stuller aims to give you the same inspiration through our expansive selection of vibrant gemstones, giving you the perfect starting point to create custom pairings and pieces. Let’s dive into this year’s shade as we explore the “Magentaverse” with Pantone®.
2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta
Considered a hybrid shade, Viva Magenta embraces a balance of strength and optimism with warm and cool tones. Chosen for its versatility, the shade was selected to represent a change in perspective, welcoming everyone into a new chapter while also connecting us to the natural world. With its similarity to the organic red tones of the cochineal beetle, Viva Magenta inspires us to celebrate humanity.
What distinguishes this year’s Color of the Year from last year’s — PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, which also married the technical with nature — is Viva Magenta’s ability to answer our collective need for strength. Reds are power colors that celebrate life. As a bright, crimson red, Viva Magenta balances boldness with a feeling of fun.
The Pantone® Color Institute
A shade that is reinforced as resilient and energizing, Viva Magenta encourages everyone to embrace themselves with confidence and sureness, in every facet of their personal expression.
Transform and Create with Viva Magenta
Described by Pantone as a “red that writes a new narrative,” we are excited to see how Viva Magenta enters the jewelry space. A transformative shade, its bright, playful tone is perfect for finding colorful gemstones that serve as both center stone statements and accents for any piece.
Connect to the natural instinct of Viva Magenta and encourage experimentation with gemstones in a range of matching or complementary hues.
