SO…? Are you loving Shark Week as much as I am, finatics? I’ve almost completely lost touch with the real world, trading social interaction for my couch, a bowl of popcorn, and the Discovery Channel.
What’s been your favorite Shark Week show so far?
I am happy that Discovery decided to return their focus back to education instead of theatrics – real sharks are exciting enough! Along with their TV programming, they’ve created an online Sharkopedia with tons of interactive diagrams and timelines that give you more insight to the mysterious lives of these fish.
I think what fascinates me most about sharks is their pure, prehistoric strength.
Did you know that a Great White can bite down with an estimated 4,000 psi of bite force? For reference, when we chomp down on a hamburger, we’re using around 150-200 psi.
Now add rows & rows of teeth into the mix. I can hear the Jaws theme song now.
When discussing teeth, I could go for the obvious and give another shout out to the Great White. But instead, let’s take a look at the extinct Helicoprion:
I don’t know about you, but I’m extremely glad these guys lived 290 million years ago and aren’t swimming around the Florida Keys right now. Look at those teeth!
Wowza. Obviously, we humans have a lot to learn from nature. Perhaps that’s why many of the tools we’ve created to make our lives easier mimic the jaw force and teeth of sharks.
Durston Ring Stretcher/Reducer
PIKE® Gold Saw Blade
Spiral Saw Blades
While none of these tools can exactly match the magnitude of what nature has created, at the end of the day, they help us get the job done – Great White approved!
