The latest bridal and wedding band trends lean toward larger, more attention-grabbing styles. Many of today’s brides opt for chunky eternity bands featuring 2.5mm stones and above. To achieve this look while staying within budget, suggest similar anniversary band styles since they hold fewer stones, and thus, cost less. Or, suggest lab-grown diamonds or moissanite bands as an alternative to genuine diamonds.

And speaking of your customers, if you think they aren’t shopping online, think again! According to a 2018 Forbes article, Baby Boomers (born 1946 – 1964) spend more time online than they do watching television. They’re on social media too, sharing more content compared to other generations. And I’m sure you’re already aware how much time younger folks spend on their smartphones, tablets, and the web in general.

Engagement Season Blog Header

Yes, it’s really Engagement Season

Who doesn’t love this time of year? With the holiday season upon us, there’s electricity in the air! Luckily for retailers, Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday sales were incredibly strong this year. Hopefully, this signals an even stronger holiday shopping season in the weeks to come.

But did you know we’re also experiencing peak Engagement Season, too? That’s right! Statistically speaking, engagement seasonality spikes sharply in November, rising through December and peaking around New Years. The engagement hype even extends into February, lasting up until Valentine’s Day.

So, Seize the Season!

With this valuable information at hand, now’s the time to stock up on the trendiest engagement rings and styles to fulfill any demand. We expect custom designs to dominate again this year, however, we’re also eyeing a few trends that seem to be exploding this Engagement Season. Take note.

Stock these top styles just in time for the 2018-2019 engagement season—

1. Angular Engagement Rings

From baguettes and trillions to geometric edges, brides-to-be this year want all the angles in their dream engagement rings. So, whether it’s Art Deco-inspired nostalgia or ultramodern kite-shaped diamonds they’re seeking, keep these sharply defined trendsetters top of mind.

2. Halo-Style Engagement Rings

Halo-style engagements just keep coming back around! And lately, we’re noticing plenty of eccentric shapes like pear, emerald, and marquise center stones wrapped in single and even double halos. Plus, colored stones like morganite and opal are receiving the halo treatment, too!

3. Gemstone Center Stone Engagements

Those who wish to break from convention are seeking non-traditional gemstones for their engagement ring centerpieces. From emerald to ruby to London Blue Topaz, colored center stones appeal to the modern woman who dares to be different.

6 Unique Engagement Ring Trends in 2018 So Far

Unique Engagement Ring Trends Blog Header

Peak wedding season is quickly approaching, meaning love is in the air, and every bride-to-be has her ring on full display. According to a recent article from JCK, recent Fashion Week runways gave us a glimpse into the hottest trends we’ll see in upcoming months— from bright colors to unique arrangements of patterns and layers. Not surprisingly, these trends will make their way into the engagement scene.

Read on to learn all about the unique engagement ring trends your customers can’t wait to have—

Geometric Engagement Designs

Customizing engagement styles has become more and more popular over the past few years. These days, the more unique the engagement ring, the better. For this reason, one of the hottest engagement ring trends features geometric center stones and distinctive bands.

Triangle and marquise diamonds create timeless rings with fashionable flair, perfect for brides-to-be who seek an engagement ring like no other! You can also bring this trend to like with hexagonal and Asscher-cut stones, along with jagged, angular accents on the band.

Rose Gold Engagement Rings

Surprise, surprise— rose gold is still incredibly popular. When it first started popping up, some assumed this fad would quickly fade away. But the past few years prove that rose gold has a permanent place in the jewelry market, so embrace this rosy metal tone.

Recent rose gold trends take this trend to entirely new heights! Many brides-to-be are choosing rose-on-rose styles with morganite stones and rose gold bands. With this pairing, it’s easy to fall in love with this unique engagement ring trend!

East-West Engagement Settings

Do you encounter brides looking for a non-traditional, yet practical style? That’s where East-West settings come in to save the day! With their center stones set horizontally, rather than the traditional vertical positioning, these exciting designs have gained a respectable reputation as of late.

These rings use traditional stones and metals to achieve a fashionable twist. This makes east-west settings perfect for brides who want a fresh style without leaving their comfort zone. And east-west designs fit more naturally on the finger compared to a north-south setting, making it practical and stylish!

Two and Three-Stone Engagement Rings

We can thank Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex for this unique engagement ring trend. Ever since Prince Harry proposed with a three-stone ring, people have gone nuts over rings with multiple stones.

Coincidentally, this trend also happens to fall in line with another observation from the previous JCK article: more is more. It seems the fashion industry is taking a sharp turn away from the minimalism we’ve seen over the last few years. These days, the more glitz and glamor, the better!

Two and three-stone rings are perfect for the girl that wants all eyes on her. Another bonus is that multiple stones allow for more customization options — like mixing-and-matching different stone colors and shapes. A three-stone setting, in particular, is perfect for the romantic couple, with each stone representing the couples’ past, present, and future.

Stackable Wedding Bands

The popularity of multiple bands offers another instance of more is more and it opens the door to different types of stones as well as new customization possibilities. Stackable bands reflect the layering trend we saw during fashion week.

Sporting a rare combination of bands brings individuality to an entirely new level. Brides can play around with different patterns, textures, and color combinations, allowing them to revamp their look as many times as they wish. This trend makes room for both cohesion and variation, all while making a statement!

Colored Gemstone Engagement Rings

While not the most recent trend on the list, colored center stones, continue to grow in favor particularly among millennial brides-to-be. Whether it’s their birthstone, zodiac gemstone, or just their favorite color, countless brides opt to add a splash of color to their rings. It’s not surprising since according to JCK’s article, bright pops of color are trendier than ever. So get ready for the colored gemstone craze!

Try mixing classic shapes with colored stones for a trendy twist. Colored stones are ideal to satisfy a girl’s need for personalization. Another selling point? Colored gemstones tend to be budget-friendly, too!

What’s the Best Metal for Men’s Wedding Bands?

Best metal for men's wedding bands Blog Header

The bride-to-be in your store has probably been planning her special day for a while now — perhaps even since she was a young girl. More often than not, she has a good idea of
the type of engagement ring she’s going after. She’ll bring along clippings from a magazine or share styles she’s pinned on Pinterest; heck, maybe she even has a sketch drawn on a napkin. No matter the case, ring shopping is usually primarily focused on the lady-in-waiting.

What About Those Disengaged Dudes?

Yet we know that most of the time, her beau hasn’t put much thought into his wedding band. Some dudes are completely uninterested in rings, and most are just unaware of the options available. There are all kinds, from the guy who’s eager to discuss each decision along the way, to the disengaged dude sitting in the corner with folded arms, staring off into space. Good news! The latter presents an opportunity for you, the trusted jeweler, to engage the groom-to-be and involve him in his very own ring selection. Inform him of all the choices when choosing his band. After all, he’ll be sporting it for the long run.

Get To Know The Guy

Each ring comes with its own pros and cons. Determining the best metal for men’s wedding bands starts with understanding his lifestyle. Consider what he does for a living. For example, some companies require their employees to wear tungsten bands because of the metal’s potential for fracturing under extreme pressure. Also, if working with electricity, he may want to steer clear of metals that have conductive properties, opting for a ceramic or stainless steel instead.

Also, ask him about what he does in his spare time. If he works on cars, steer him away from soft, precious metals like gold and silver and go for a stronger metal that is resistant to scratching. A swimmer may need a metal that can withstand harsh chemicals, like chlorine. Precious metals may be a strong fit for a coin collector who treasures value and rarity. An avid hunter should avoid a band with a bright polished finish which could reflect sunlight and scare away the game.

What’s His Style?

His wedding band is not only an expression of marital commitment but also an expression of himself. Urge the guy to choose a band that reflects his style. He may choose a classic band profile like half-round or comfort-fit, or he may prefer a more modern look like two-tone or hand-engraved. If he’s interested in personalizing his precious metal band, consider engraving the band for a unique touch. He may choose to add a special message or scripture verse in a brawny font or even in his own custom handwriting.

There are plenty of opportunities to engage the guy in the ring buying process. Remember, following the initial engagement ring sale, there are two more subsequent rings to be sold: the bride’s and groom’s bands. Even more important than any sale, however, is the opportunity to get to know your customer and build a lasting relationship with the happy couple. Take the time to create patrons who’ll turn to you for years to come.

So what’s the best metal for men’s wedding bands?

Well, it depends on the guy. Does he want precious or contemporary metal? Is he more interested in rarity and value or durability? Which band profile does he want? Engraving? Finishes? Get to know your guy, then walk him through the process to create his personalized band. Use the handout below to help your groom-to-be determine the best metal for men’s wedding bands.

Distribute this handout to the dudes that come into your store. Let them know they have the power to pick the band that perfectly represents their style. And let him take the reigns in determining the best metal for men’s wedding bands.

Solitaires with a Twist

Think back to the 1965 Mustang, Coca-cola, Frank Sinatra, and Audrey Hepburn. All classics. These style icons have withstood the test of time, bringing nostalgia and happiness to our lives. These classics continue to inspire us with their multi-generational appeal. Likewise, solitaires are another timeless trend that has yet to fade away. Long a symbol of sophistication and grace, these timeless options have served as staple choices for decades, withstanding the test of time.

Why are solitaires a classic? They’re simple and refined. And there’s no better way to show off a gorgeous diamond than with a shank and mounting that directs onlookers to the center stone’s brilliance.

At a glance, each ring featured here shines as a solitaire. But closer inspection reveals their intricate design. With the engagements featured below, our design team set out to create styles that remained faithful to the solitaire’s proven aesthetic while incorporating fresh details that fashionable brides are sure to appreciate. Best of all, these special, subtle features don’t detract from the beauty of the diamond – they enhance it!

Feature Friday – Morgan Bares

Morgan Bares Header Feature Friday

Morgan Bares Headshot Black & WhiteI’ve been working within the jewelry industry since I was 19. While I was in college in Jackson, Mississippi, I worked at a retail jewelry store managing the in-store and marketing promotions. My connection with Stuller traces back many years, starting at three years of age. Maren Rosen’s mom was my violin teacher growing up. Soon after I moved home from college, I reached out to Maren to inquire about a job in marketing. As luck would have it, Maren quickly found a spot for me in Merchandising. I started off in September 2013 as an Assistant Product Manager working with Taylor Burgess in the metal fashion and chain department. A year later, I was promoted to my current position as Bridal Product Manager.

In my current role, I manage our engagement, eternity and anniversary, and ever&ever® businesses. My job keeps me on my toes at all times. Never do I have time to look at the clock to see how many more hours are left in the day. I love being able to work with people across the company, all working together to achieve great things for our customers.

I love my job because each day is different – new challenges, projects and problems come my way every hour and keep things interesting. I’m fortunate and grateful to work alongside such an amazing team. They are all rock stars in their own way, keeping Stuller’s bridal business thriving. Their hard work and dedication makes this job rewarding and helps us to provide our customers with the bridal pieces they need.

Morgan Bares New Bridal Rings

Morgan Bares models the newest styles

Ever&ever® is another huge part of my job. Though only a small facet of the bridal business, we put much energy into this holistic bridal program in order to aid our customers’ success. In the last 3 years, ever&ever® has evolved greatly thanks to every single team in this building – from marketing to inventory, design, web development, manufacturing and more. Everyone at Stuller has played a part in growing ever&ever® into Stuller’s first comprehensive bridal program.

I especially love being able to provide engagement rings that will one day make a special person the happiest girl in the world. Imagine that! The rings we design and work with on a daily basis will one day land on someone’s finger, symbolizing the most important and special union of their life.

As for our new bridal styles, I’m loving how classic and traditional they are. I always reiterate you can only recreate the bridal wheel so many times. We’ve been adding small twists on classic pieces lately to much success. Though small and subtle changes, each creates unique rings that might be different than a bride’s friends’ ring, with small diamond accents like a diamond rail around the gallery, for example. Even changing the prongs from standard round prongs to claw prongs or changing the setting type from standard scallop to French set creates classic yet unique engagement rings. We have countless new styles like these thanks to the consistent work from our design team.

Morgan Bares Boyfriend & DogMy favorite Stuller memory was launching ever&ever® at JCK in 2015. I remember running to Target in Las Vegas the night before the show to buy accessories and scissors to dress up the small section in our booth at the time. It’s amazing to look back and see how the program has evolved. In fact, much has changed since then as well. We’ve seen new trends become hot topics like lab-grown diamonds, colored metal, thin shanks, and stackable bands. The industry is always changing and though challenging, it’s exciting to keep up AND stay ahead.

Outside of work, I love to travel and spend equal amounts of time on the beach and on my couch. I also stay active, teaching exercise classes at Pure Barre after work and some weekends. I spend much time on the road traveling to visit my short/long-distance boyfriend and our less than a year old puppy, Evie, who live in New Orleans. We watch movies and enjoy good wine and great food. Typically, I try to unplug from work as much as possible over the weekend in order to stay connected and energized during the week. I give my all into work when I’m here, so the more re-energizing I can do outside of the office, the better!

Have you had success with ever&ever®? Tell us all about it in the comments below! Check out last week’s Feature Friday post here in case you missed it.

Stroll Through Popular Engagement Ring Trends by Decade

You’ve probably hosted customers in search of the perfect vintage ring. The bride-to-be may have worn high-waist jeans while her beau sported a grizzly beard or high-top sneakers. It’s no secret that trends come and go, then come back again full circle.

As artisans, we are able to incorporate looks from the past in order to create meaningful and customized pieces, bringing a customer’s vision of the perfect engagement ring to life.

Take a step back in time with us as we examine popular engagement ring trends by decade.

1950s Engagement Ring Trends

Did you know that while Elvis was establishing himself as the king of Rock and Roll during the 50s, the Hope Diamond found a forever home in the Smithsonian (1958)?

When it came to engagement rings, there was a rise of single, fancy-shaped stones, particularly the marquise diamond. Stackable bands, which were also trending during this time (thanks Audrey Hepburn), are still popular styles today.

1960s Bridal Trends

The Beatles, Woodstock, and a man on the moon, the 1960s brought about the changing of culture.

Styles changed too. Linear geometric shapes resurged. Floral motifs and colored center stones were popular too. Pop icons such as Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly rocked emerald-cut stones, while emeralds themselves were a trend started by first lady Jackie Kennedy.

1970s Engagement Ring Trends

Not only did the Star Wars saga begin during the 70s but Stuller’s story also started in 1970. Toll-free phone ordering was introduced in 1972, and prime manufacturing ramped up in 1973.

In the bridal industry, statement pieces were all the rage. Cluster rings were popular, along with princess-cut diamonds, which were perfected during this time. These rings were typically set in yellow gold and accompanied by matching wedding bands.

1980s Engagement Trends

The 80s, particularly 1982, were a great time to be alive. Not only did Michael Jackson release his “Thriller album,” one of the best selling albums ever, Stuller also debuted its revolutionary next-day delivery that same year.

You may recall the Royal Wedding and Princess Diana’s beautiful sapphire ring. This iconic piece set off a firestorm for sapphire around the globe and created an instant trend. Bigger, flashier pieces seemed to be all the rage at the time as well, usually featuring round or oval center stones. Platinum was a popular metal, though white and yellow gold were chosen too.

1990s Bridal Trends

The days before the World Wide Web are hard to recall, despite it being around for only twenty-five years or so. Stuller.com was introduced in 1997, along with a customization program called Have It Your Way.

During this time, we saw a rise in popularity of radiant-cut diamonds with triangular stones on each side. There was also a surge in three-stone rings.

2000s Engagement Ring Trends

The turn of the century brought about a swift move into a new age of technology. Stuller partnered with Gemvision in 2009 to expand our design software, allowing for customization options such as CounterSketch® in 2010 and 3C in 2012.

Princess-cut center stones were popular, as well as, halo-style designs. However, due to the availability of numerous customization options for shoppers today, no particular trend has dominated in recent years.

Future Bridal and Engagement Rings

The future is never certain. However, there are two things that can be assured: engagement ring styles will continue to change as trends evolve over time. And Stuller will be with you every step of the way to accommodate the progression of the industry.

As we look forward, customization reigns king, along with rose gold mountings and colored center stones.

Be a Timeless Bride (With a Trendy Twist)

Post-Sales tips

Today’s brides want to make an individual fashion statement. But, it doesn’t mean that they want to venture too far from the beaten path when it comes to picking an engagement ring. Subtle details like small adjustments or hidden elements are just the right touches to make a ring unique to its wearer (Customization helps too, as almost 50% of brides opt to add a custom element to their rings – Knot Survey, 2015). If your brides are looking to make a classic statement, offer some of these suggestions:

Two-Stone Engagement Rings

With so much symbolism behind them, two-stone rings are great because they are multipurpose. They can be used to symbolize love or celebrate a special occasion all while providing a unique look. Bypass and halo-style — two elements that we’ve seen before keep this ring in a traditional playing field.

Horizontal Halo-Style Engagement Rings

Who knew something so simple as changing the direction of a stone would create such an updated engagement ring, even on the most classic style? East-to-west engagements do just that!

Solitaire Engagement Rings

This solitaire is one of my all-time favorites this year. It has a lot of substance to it, with a very substantial width shank, six prongs around the center stone, and beautiful sparkle surrounding the gallery. So classic with a glam touch. Sometimes adding a bit of hidden sparkle is all you need.

Diamond-Accented X Engagement Ring

This ring is for the bride looking for something none of her friends will have. We started with a very modern X shank, added a pattern to the inside, and topped the whole ring off with edgy and updated claw prongs holding the center stone in place.

Vintage-Inspired Engagement Rings

Vintage styling has made a huge statement this year. It is the trend customers are asking for more than anything. We have taken many classic styles and added feminine, romantic details through metal work and diamond accents to create timeless vintage looks.

Solitaire Engagement Rings with Hidden Elements

Gallery accents and two-tone styles have been on our bridal radar all year long. Brides love being able to add a little something special that only she might know about on the gallery of the ring, using unique details, and mixing up the metal color a bit with a touch of rose or yellow gold.
