2020 Social Media Strategy in Three Easy Steps

Are you searching for a New Year’s resolution? And I don’t mean the standard options most people opt for this time of year. I’m talking about one that will help grow your business! (HINT: No gym membership required.)

Do I have your attention yet? Keep reading.

 

Here are the facts headed into 2020:

  • Gen Z will account for 32% of the global population by next year. And where do you think these consumers of the future will be doing product research?
  • 74% of consumers rely on social media when making a purchasing decision. Surprised? I’m not! And, that’s a number that continues to grow.

Despite both of those resounding details…

  • Fewer than half of companies doing social media marketing have a documented social media strategy.

Guess which half you’re going to be in once you finish reading this blog post. That’s right — the half with a strategy! Here is my three-step process for creating a simple, attainable social media strategy:

Step 1: Plan

First thing’s first, you need a plan. The very basic first step here is to stop winging it when it comes to your daily social media posts. Sit down once a month and map out exactly what content you will be posting on each day. This plan would contain the date and time you intend to post, the photo/video/article you will be sharing, the caption that will be accompanying said content piece, and any hashtags you’d like to include. This plan can be in a fancy content management tool like this, it can be in Excel/Google Sheets, or it can be plain old pencil and paper for all I care. The method does not matter! Just get yourself a plan. That’s 2020 resolution number 1.

Step 2: Implement

So I’ve convinced you to create a content plan. Next up is implementation. Seems simple enough, but it’s so easy to put your social strategy on the back burner when you’re in the trenches. Especially when, as is the case for most of the jewelers we work with, you wear so many hats. When you’re the bench jeweler, the CAD designer, the salesperson, and occasionally the janitor, it can seem impossible to also become the social media marketer. When it feels that way, I ask you to please remember the plan you have in place. If you did the work during Step 1, you should be able to allocate 10 minutes a day to executing. Ten measly minutes! Block yourself out for the same time every day and get it done. That’s 2020 resolution number 2. (Pro Tip: Explore scheduling tools like Creator Studio that allow you to schedule your Facebook and Instagram posts ahead of time.)

Step 3: Measure

Whoop! Whoop! We’ve reached my favorite part of this three-step approach — measuring. At this point, you spent time thinking up great post ideas AND you got them out on the appropriate channels at the intended time. Kudos to you! The third and final step, which you will see loops the whole strategy together, is to measure the success of these posts.

It’s important to note that success can look different to each of you reading this, depending on both your business model and subsequent business goals tied to your social media efforts. For example, a store with an online shopping experience should use social media to drive traffic to their website. That means you would look for metrics such as clicks to your site and conversion rates once consumers land there. For a brick and mortar store, you should try to drive traffic to your physical location. Keep an eye on metrics related to “Get Directions” or “Call Now” buttons if this is your goal. Some of you may decide that you simply want to generate interest in your products and services using social media. Comments and private messages could be monitored to see if you are reaching that goal.

I personally think it’s pretty neat that no matter your goal, social media will be here to help in 2020. This step of forming your social media strategy is really just deciding how to use these innovative tools to your business’s advantage.

Adjust and Repeat

Now that you’ve made it all the way through my strategy building process, the last thing to do is remind you to adjust and repeat. Meaning, that as you begin to measure your social media performance based on the success metrics you’ve determined, you’re going to learn SO MUCH. You’re going to learn about your audience — what content types they like to see, how they like to be engaged within the space, what product categories resonate most with them, and so on and so forth. It’s going to be a gold mine of data, and it would be a miss if you didn’t take advantage of it. So, adjust your strategy as you learn more about your customers, and take it from the top!

How to Use Facebook Insights to Inform Your Social Strategy

Social media plays an imperative role in almost any company’s success. However, as most are finding out, it goes beyond just posting photos of products and responding to customers online. Having an effective social media presence takes time. And time is money, am I right? So, let’s make sure we’re using social media effectively AND efficiently. Here’s the secret sauce:

Serve the right content to the right person at the right time.

 

“But Kristyn,” you ask, “I don’t know what the right content, the right person, OR the right time is.” Neither do I, TBH. You know who does though? Your Facebook Insights. Let’s dive in.

To better understand how to take advantage of Facebook insights, you must know where to find them. The GIF below shows how to navigate to the parts of Facebook Insights you will need today.

1. What’s the right content?

There’s a section of Facebook Insights that breaks down the success of different post types based on average reach and engagement specific to your page. In the screenshot below, you can see that our link posts (mostly blog posts) are currently outperforming our other content types.

Try to keep a good mix of content types flowing through your Facebook Page. But, if your insights are telling you that your blogs and videos outperform your photos, what should you be investing time in creating? More blogs and videos, of course! Check out the results of this section on your own page for guidance on the types of content you should focus on creating.

2. Determine Content Themes

Now that you know which content types are resonating with your audience, you need to determine what content themes will perform well. If you scroll down on this same page of your Facebook insights, you will come across the section below. Here you will find a breakdown of the individual performance of your most recent posts. The most important metric here is your per post engagement rate. The higher this percentage, the better.

Take a look at this section of your insights to see which posts outperform others. Try to draw conclusions based on that data. Maybe you will start to notice common threads. Perhaps fun facts about gemstones perform really well or lifestyle photos get more likes compared to jewelry photography. Pay close attention to this section to better understand what to post in an effort to get the most engagement out of your audience!

3. Who’s the right person?

Now, you’ve used your insights to generate some effective content ideas! The next step is to make sure your audience engages with that content. What’s the key to getting your audience to engage with your content on social media? Understanding who they are in the first place. Think about it. How can you create posts your audience will like if you don’t even know who they are? That’s why I encourage you to check the Your Fans section of your Facebook Insights regularly:

Do you have a predominantly male audience? That could definitely change the way you speak to them in your posts. What age is the majority of your followers? You probably have products that steer more toward that age group. Knowing what types of content resonates with your audience AND having a clear picture of who you’re talking to will help create content that works!

4. When’s the right time?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever Googled something like: When’s the best time to post on Facebook? 🙋‍♀️ Same! And it did not give me the correct answer, so who do we trust?

In your Facebook Insights, choose the Posts tab and that’s when you will see this data:

Here, you’ll find which times and days of the week most of YOUR Facebook audience is online. This data is much more valuable and targeted than any general recommendations found using Google search. This section will tell you not only what days of the week will work best, but what time of those popular days, too.

Here’s the pro tip: If your Facebook insights tell you that Thursday at 8PM is when the highest concentration of your audience is online, schedule your post for 7PM. Publishing at 7PM will give your content enough time to get through Facebook’s algorithm and start showing up to your active 8PM audience.

So what’s the recipe for social media success? No, it’s not funny memes or viral cat videos. Simply put: deliver the right content to the right person at the right time.

Instagram Algorithm Decoded: How Instagram Prioritizes Content

Once upon a time, Instagram (and all other social channels, for that matter) showed you content from the accounts you followed in reverse chronological order. Those were the good old days, am I right? Wrong!

Do you know how hard it was for potential customers to find you on social before “Recommended For You” and “Similar to Posts You’ve Interacted With” came along? It was nearly impossible. So, before you shake your fists in the air and curse Instagram’s algorithm, let’s learn about the advantages of an algorithm-based feed.

 

Here’s the mysterious recipe— the Instagram Algorithm decoded. Now, you’ll be able to use this newfound knowledge to build a stronger content strategy.

 

What is the Instagram Algorithm?

First things first, we need to understand what an algorithm is. THEN, we can apply it to the social world.

So, if an algorithm is a process in which something is calculated, how does that apply to the social space? Well, Instagram’s News Feed is the end result of its content dispersion algorithm. A very necessary component to the platform, I might add, now that more than 100 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram each day. The folks at Instagram’s headquarters developed a specific set of criteria used to filter, rank and organize all of those photos and videos uploaded to its platform. What is that criteria, you ask? Keep reading.

How Does it Work?

According to Instagram, the algorithm takes into account three main factors, which weight the system more than anything else. Note: Instagram actually invited a bunch of Tech Journalists to cover this topic! The following information is directly from Social Media TodayThose three elements are:

1. Interest

The algorithm determines how interested you will likely be in each individual post by factoring how much you’ve engaged with similar content in the past. For this, Instagram looks at how each user engages with image and video posts. Interestingly, the system will also assess the actual visual content of posts, facilitated by Instagram’s evolving image recognition tools.

2. Timeliness

Instagram also factors in when the post was published. Some users have complained that they’ve been seeing too much older content in their feeds, which Instagram recently rolled out an update to address.

3. Relationship

And the last major factor is your relationship with the post creator, based on how much you’ve engaged with them in the past. The factors used in this calculation could include common interactions, like comments and likes on each others’ posts, but also direct messages and post tags (i.e. if you’re commonly tagged in that person’s images and vice versa)

Where Do I Go From Here?

Good question. An algorithm-driven social world can be scary to navigate, but there’s one word that stands out to me every single time Instagram coaches us on content. It’s even mentioned in two of the three criteria outlined above.

E N G A G E M E N T

Engaging content is the key to success. And no, that does not simply mean posts that are pretty and get likes. We fall into that trap in our industry all the time, because, well— jewelry is pretty! Engaging posts get more than likes. They spark conversations in the comments, they generate clicks to your profile for more information, and they get shared with other users.

So, the next time you’re about to hit Post on Instagram, think about this: Is this just another beautiful photo? Or do you have more value to offer than that? I’m willing to bet you do.

Ask a question. Provide a tip. Make a joke. Tell a story. Be authentic.

When you do, the algorithm will reward you.

3 Summer Social Media Suggestions to Improve Your Strategy

Hello sweet, sweet summertime.

 

Well, if by sweet you mean slooooow, then we’re on the same page. Summertime in the jewelry industry is infamous for its seasonal slowdown. So, if your spring cleaning didn’t happen because you were buried in Mother’s Day business— it’ll happen this summer. And what about the inventory that hasn’t had any attention in years? Time to melt them down! You know what else you are going to do this summer? You are going to spend some downtime stepping up your social game. And I’m going to tell you how!

 

Here are my summer social media suggestions to turn your downtime into social showtime.

1. Take Inventory on Your Audience

What’s the key to getting your audience to engage with your content on social media? Understanding who your audience is in the first place. Think about it. How can you create posts that your audience will like if you don’t even know who they are? That’s why the first, and most important, social task you should complete this summer is to conduct an audience inventory.

An audience inventory (see examples below) is simply a quick exercise to help you understand your audience relative to each platform. You will use the different insights available within your active social spaces to get the following information:

  • Total Follower Count
  • Gender Breakdown
  • Age Distribution
  • Location Concentration
  • Most Active Day/Time

Gather this information for each platform and use it to learn more about your audience. Having a clearer picture of who you’re talking to will help you create more engaging content!

2. Perform Hashtag Research

This summer social media suggestion is for all the Instagrammers! By now, I think we’re all pretty familiar with the concept of hashtags. We know how they work AND how important they are for discoverability and engagement. What you may not know, however, is which ones freaking work! Take some time this summer to do some hashtag research and make that 30-per-post hashtag limit count.

How to Conduct Hashtag Research for Instagram

To conduct hashtag research, start by simply checking out how your current hashtags are contributing to your posts’ success. Do this by clicking View Insights when looking at a particular post. Next, look for the following two metrics: % of accounts reached that weren’t following you AND impressions from hashtags. Both of these are under the Discovery section of your account. This will help you understand how users discovered your Instagram post! If either of these numbers is higher than that of your other posts, this is an indicator that your hashtag game was on point for that post. Try using similar combinations in future posts and see if you achieve the same results!

If you want to take it a step further, there are tools like SmartHash that allow you to search for hashtags (ranked by highest performing), get new suggestions based on hashtags you already know are popular, and even split-test different sets of hashtags on your posts!

3. Build Your Community

Our first two summer social media suggestions were designed to help get more people to discover your accounts on social media. This next step is all about you discovering others on social media, which is just as important— especially on Instagram!

Engagement goes two ways, and the algorithms know that. In fact, many platforms prioritize showing your content to users who like and comment on your posts regularly AND those you proactively engage with. Spend some downtime this summer liking and commenting on your customers’ (and prospective target audience) posts from your business account. This will signal to the algorithm that two-way communication is happening. This will ultimately start showing your content to those users more often.

I will openly admit that each of these recommendations requires a bit of your time. BUT, if you’re serious about improving your social strategy, doing the heavy lifting over the next few months is totally worth it. Hi Katelynne. Congrats on your well-earned title of 2019 March Bridal Madness Champion. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your store? 

I grew up in a tiny Montana town. I’m technically a third-generation jeweler— my grandfather was a watchmaker and later opened our family’s jewelry store; my father has been in the business for 40+ years.

I always say I circled around and came into jewelry backwards! As a kid, I loved art and was very creative. I fell into making jewelry as a hobby and before I knew it, people were asking if they could buy my pieces. Custom orders started to take up most of my time, and eventually I quit my 9-5 job to work from home while caring for my three young children.

After a few years, my husband and I decided it was time to stop working from the kitchen table. That’s when I dove headfirst into opening my retail shop a little over five years ago. My father joined me in my store about two years ago, so it’s been great to have him here to share his expertise and knowledge; my husband joined me about 18 months ago. We love the family aspect of being together during the day.

 

What’s the story behind your store’s clever name?

I receive many questions about the store’s name— Sugar Plum Jewelry Co. Sugarplum is what my mother has called me my whole life. So, since the store really reflects me and my craft, the name stuck!

Your March Bridal Madness entry is absolutely stunning. Can you share the story of this piece?

The backstory is quite funny, and my clients asked that I share it entirely. The round main diamond and the melee are from a ring that was returned to him after a broken engagement. The pear shape main diamond was from his grandmother’s ring and was given by his grandfather. The couple wanted to use all the diamonds, and she was especially excited to take the old engagement ring apart and re-purpose those diamonds for her own ring. She said, “My man, my diamonds now!”

 

Where did you find inspiration for this design?

Because this was a remount using the stones my clients had available, I had to find an interesting way to use asymmetry to make something aesthetically pleasing. I designed this with a white gold band and rose gold settings for the main diamonds. The stones have just a bit of warm color to them, so the rose gold really complements them while setting them apart from the rest of the ring. The bezel settings are functional because of my customer’s lifestyle and the type of work she does.

The wedding bands were designed to hug the main ring, and I also really loved the symbolism of “Now, Tomorrow, Forever” that we achieved by making double wedding bands.

Can you tell us all about your creative design process?

I do a lot of re-design work, and sometimes I need to sit with the pieces I’m going to be working with and let an idea formulate. For this particular design, it came together very quickly. Sometimes I feel like the design pulls itself together in my mind and I just see it immediately. This particular design really felt right to me, for her, so I did a quick 30-second sketch for my clients. That’s all they needed to see to know they’d love it!

Throughout your career, what’s something that sticks out as a high point?

One of my favorite moments has been when my husband and I got to help orchestrate a surprise engagement right in our store! My client thought it would be the perfect way to catch his girlfriend off-guard and it definitely was! His entire family got to be there to see it, including his mother who was terminally ill. It was a really sweet moment. The ability to be personally involved in the big, special moments in our clients’ lives is an honor and something I’m extremely grateful for.

 

What impact has custom design software had on your business?

Technology has completely changed my business. It makes it possible to quickly show a client what I’m envisioning for them. For example, Stuller’s 3C product online makes it incredibly easy to show changes to an engagement ring. This way, my clients can SEE it in action. It’s definitely a game-changer!

Because I grew up as the daughter of a jeweler, Stuller was a household name for us! A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Shoppable Instagram and Facebook Posts

Social media boasts prime real estate for spreading brand awareness and engaging with your customer base. And while social media works ’round the clock to connect with your audience, sometimes it’s difficult to quantify the impact. Luckily, it’s now easier than ever to create transactions on social media using shoppable Instagram and Facebook posts. It might seem like a daunting task at first, but this will help draw more customers to your doors AND close more sales.

Here is a simple guide to creating shoppable Instagram and Facebook posts—

Step 1: Switch to Business Accounts

Before you can start to build your shoppable Instagram and Facebook posts, your accounts on each platform must be business versions. This means having a Facebook Page rather than a profile and converting your regular Instagram into a business account by choosing Switch to Business Profile in your settings menu.

Step 2: Link Your Accounts

Next, you must make sure these accounts are linked to one another. You can accomplish this one of two ways:

1- Visit your Inbox Tab on your Facebook Page when viewing on a desktop computer. Here you will see an Instagram logo. When clicked, it will then prompt you to connect your profiles by entering your account credentials.

2- Choose Linked Accounts in your Instagram account settings from your mobile phone. You will choose Facebook and simply follow the on-screen prompts, entering your account credentials to connect your profiles.

 

We recommend that you complete the next two steps on a desktop computer

 

Step 3: Add the Shop Tab

In your Facebook Page settings, locate the Edit Page tab. Here you will see all of the tabs you have set up on your page. (About, Reviews, Events, etc.) Scroll to the bottom and choose Add a Tab. Select Shop. This functionality will then show up as an option on your page.

 

Step 4: Import Your Inventory

This is where you’ll start adding inventory to your new Shop! When you choose Add Product, you will be guided through adding your first piece. You will add photos and/or videos, product price and description, and a checkout URL (a link to purchase). Repeat this process with each piece you wish to upload.

My recommendation: Start by uploading styles with existing photography that you would like to post soon. This enables you to start building up your Shop as you simultaneously create your shoppable Instagram and Facebook posts.

Step 5: Wait for Approval

Once you add a single product to your Facebook Shop, you can begin to tag that product in any posts within thirty minutes or less. However, on Instagram, you must wait for approval before you can begin the process. According to Instagram, “Once you fulfill the above requirements (Steps 1-4), your account is reviewed for access to the feature. Usually, the review process takes a few days, but sometimes we may need to review your account in more detail, which can take longer.”

 

Step 6: Tag Product

Now, all you have to do is tag products from your Shop in any corresponding posts! Viewing your photo from a desktop computer, you will now see the option to Tag Products. Click on that button, and then click on the product within the photo. Type whatever you named the style in the pop-up and that’s all there is to it! You will now see a shopping bag when you hover over this photo on desktop AND mobile.

Step 7: Close More Sales!

Do a happy dance! You are DONE creating your Shop and will start converting more social sales before you know it.

Raise your hand if you’re trying to succeed in the social space with nothing but a smartphone. 🙋‍♀️ If your hand went up, this blog post is for you! Welcome to Social Media Jewelry Photography— a quick guide to using your smartphone (and a few cool tools) to capture stunning images of your jewelry to post on social media.

First Thing’s First:

The device matters! If you’re relying on a smartphone for your social media jewelry photography, you need the latest and greatest out there. Currently, that’s the iPhone XR and the Google Pixel 3, but you can get away with one version prior.

Now that we have a high-quality mobile device to capture our images, here are a few tips and tricks to get your photos ready for social media. We’ll start with the lowest investment required, then work our way up.

Let’s start with my favorite level of investment— FREE! Here are four must-have apps that I use to edit social media jewelry photography every single day.

First Up: Instagram

How many of you use Instagram to edit your smartphone photos? YOU SHOULD. The editing capabilities of Instagram are literally like having Adobe LightRoom in your pocket. It’s so much more than just filters. I encourage you to dig around in the editing options and get a feel for it in your spare time!

In the latest State of the Industry Social Media Report, marketers reported that video content received 50% MORE engagement than other content types, on average. Who wants 50% more engagement but feels like they don’t have time to produce full-on videos? Yeah, I totally feel that way sometimes. In addition to your smartphone and social media apps, there are several social media jewelry photography tools that can be used to capture professional-quality images. Here are a few our favorites, starting with the basic and inexpensive and moving toward the more sophisticated.

Give Me the Loupe!

Oh yes, the old reliable loupe! I’m sure every one of you has a few of these lying around, right?! This is one of our new arrivals — the Hexagon Triplet 10X LoupeWe’re going to use this loupe for The Selfie-Loupe Technique. All you need is your phone, a diamond loupe, and tweezers.

Here is a step-by-step guide to the Selfie-Loupe Technique

Clean the phone camera lens.
Place the phone on a table with the screen facing up.
Activate the selfie camera.

Place the diamond loupe on top of the phone lens (making sure the loupe lens is also clean).
Hold the diamond with the tweezers above the loupe.

Make sure the lighting fixture on the ceiling is not visible in the frame. If unavoidable, ask someone to hold up a white background 40 centimeters above the diamond.

Fix the on-screen exposure to reach optimal look, as needed.

Select video mode, preferably, although still images will result in an authentic image as well (the tweezers will look distorted due to the diamond loupe effect).

We know, we know– this is your busiest time of year. You don’t even have time for a full eight hours of sleep, much less the opportunity to read a blog post about improving your social media strategy in the new year . . .

Why, you ask? Because below you will find THREE social media resolutions for the new year AND I’m going to show you how to accomplish each and every one of them in 2019. Are you ready?

1. Resolve for consistency

One of the BEST things you can do to improve your social media presence is to be consistent with your audience. Have you noticed that my social media blog goes out around the same time every single month? That’s on purpose! When you distribute content rhythmically, your followers (especially your most loyal ones) will recognize your schedule and begin anticipating your posts. An audience that is ready and waiting for your posts is the fastest way to earn high engagement rates. Here’s how to commit to consistency:

Determine how often you can post

Whether it’s 3 times a day or 3 times a week, it doesn’t matter. Decide on what’s feasible for you and your team and stick with it!

Determine the best time for you to post

Eliminate the guesswork by checking out your platform insights. On your Facebook Page, for example, you would click Insights > Posts > When Your Fans Are Online (See below). Here, you’ll see which days of the week your fans are online and their average times. Choose the most popular days and post one hour before your followers come online. This will give your content time to make it through the algorithms and land in their feeds.

Stick to it­­

Deliver every single time you promised yourself you would. Help yourself stay accountable by using a content calendar. Print it out and place it in a high traffic area. 2. Resolve to be more engaging in 2019

This one is the easiest social media resolutions. Simply put, respond to every single person that engages with your content on social media. Today, our lives are fast-paced and heavily digitized. In a world where everything is automated, what is nicer than interacting with a genuine human on the other side of the phone, email, etc.? Nothing, right?

The same applies to your social media presence. Respond to every message and comment. Don’t be afraid to let your store’s personality shine through, too! Obviously, this means answering all questions, but there’s more to it. If someone comments, “Oooh pretty!” respond with a “Thank you!” If someone cracks a friendly joke in your comment section, laugh along. Every comment (even your own responses) counts as engagement on your posts. So the more conversations you create under your own content, the higher it will rank in their timelines.

3. Resolve to innovate in the new year

We’re following the easier social media resolutions with the most difficult. I want to challenge you to try something NEW in 2019. It’s easy to stick to what you know and remain in your comfort zone — but in the social space — that just won’t cut it. Each platform updates often and sometimes, what worked yesterday doesn’t produce the same results today.

So, resolve to constantly innovate your social media strategy to stay relevant. Now, I know that seems intimidating, but that’s what I’m here for! Our social media team is constantly testing out new features, technologies, and content. Then, I get to report back to you with what proves most valuable.
