A Modern Revival of Toi et Moi Style Rings

The Toi et Moi trend has returned in new and exciting ways.

The nature of fashion trends is that most come and go. What’s popular today may be gone tomorrow. But that also means that something that went out of style in the past might make a stunning reappearance in the fashion arena. This is definitely the case for Toi et Moi rings.

The Story Behind Toi et Moi Rings

Toi et Moi is French for “You and Me.” The purpose of this historic style is to symbolize a pairing of partners. Rings like these feature two gemstones, at least one often being a diamond. The most traditional usage of these rings is to tell a romantic love story, so the most common practice of this style is as a Toi et Moi engagement ring. In fact, that is how this style came to be.

The first Toi et Moi ring was made by Napoleon Bonaparte for his wife Josephine de Beauharnais in 1796. Josephine’s ring included a diamond and a sapphire, each an offset pear shape. Many iterations of this style have been seen since, such as Jackie Kennedy’s diamond and emerald engagement ring from President John F. Kennedy and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s square-shaped diamond engagement ring from Henri de Laborde de Monpezat.

You and Me Forever: Toi et Moi Engagement Rings

The two-stone engagement ring setting is back on the rise. If you look at recent celebrity proposals, you’ll notice a few A-listers that are showing off their own Toi et Moi engagement ring.

Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski made waves in 2018 when she announced her engagement and marriage to Sebastian Bear-McClard. Not only was the whirlwind romance a shock, but all eyes were on her stunning Toi et Moi engagement ring featuring a pear-shape diamond complemented by a square-shaped diamond set on a simple and thin gold shank.

During the COVID-19 quarantine period, Ariana Grande and her now-husband Dalton Gomez ignited and grew their relationship that led to a December 2020 proposal. Gomez proposed with a Toi et Moi ring set with an oval-shape diamond and a pearl, which fans believe is a family heirloom from her grandmother and meant to bring her protection.

Most recently, Colson Baker (known professionally as Machine Gun Kelly) proposed to Megan Fox with a Toi et Moi ring he designed himself. The ring is actually two separate rings with magnetic shanks that hold them together set with the couple’s birthstones, a pear-shaped emerald and diamond.

With this trend returning in popularity in recent years, Katelyn with the Stuller bridal team provided her thoughts.

“This historical favorite has become a growing choice for newly engaged couples, including those in the spotlight of fame. A true representation of a love story, Toi et Moi symbolizes two becoming one. What is more romantic than that?”

A New Twist: Toi et Moi Fine Jewelry

While the Toi et Moi style is predominantly seen in the bridal jewelry industry, it is also seeing potential within fine jewelry outside of the romantic setting. Recently, Kylie Jenner posted about a set of matching rings for her and her daughter Stormi. They were a gift from Stormi’s father Travis Scott. The rings feature pear and radiant-shaped diamonds.

This is an interesting take on the Toi et Moi ring style where rather than the stones representing a romantic partnership, they symbolize the love between a mother and child. Rings like these introduce a different view of the Toi et Moi style and Taylor with Stuller’s fine jewelry team had this to say:

“I love the Toi et Moi trend because it's so versatile and unique to the wearer. Beyond an engagement ring, we are now seeing these styles used in fine jewelry for matching mother daughter rings, best friend rings, and even rings for partners to celebrate a milestone using birthstones! It's exciting to see a reimagined take on this traditional style.”
